Heya,

So anyways, i've been a busy bee ordering all my stuff for my custom loop. Got everything I need winding it's way to me right now.

All that is left to order is the GPU waterblock. I was looking at one of the EK-FC R9-290X (Rev.2.0) blocks

Now my card is an MSI 290x Twin Frozer v308-018b

When I looked on the coolingconfig, the earliest 290x v308 that EK do a compatible block for is v308-001R.

As you can imagine, I am a little hesitant.

Is the v308-018b really all that different? Can it be done? Will I need to get the Dremel out?

I asked in two places :-D

Email response:

"Thank you for contacting us.

We are really sorry, but without the picture of this cards PCB we can't tell you if it is compatible or not.

Is it possible that you send us a picture of your cards PCB so that we can try to determine if it is compatible?"

And EK Forums:

"MSI did change the layout of their PCB's between those versions, especially around the VRM sections, making our block incompatible. To make it compatible we would have to redo the milling of the block.

And frankly at the speed some manufacturers change their custom PCB layouts it would be too hard and costly for us to follow"

I'm wondering if I could still chance it and use a Dremel to grind down the areas that might need it?

try contacting msi to see if you can get to them to tell you if they changed the layout and if they did ask ek if there will be any conflict with those changes. using a dremel now thats brave

If you have a look on Overclock.net there are a few threads on this. I have the R9 290 Gaming and keep thinking of buying a block but it's not clear whether it would fit. My PCB is marked V308 VER:1.0 so might be ok.

Apparently one of the newer changes they made was with the chokes, and the newer non-compatible layout has gold ones.

Mine is marked v308 ver 1.0, waterblock fitted fine.

On Ek's cooling config page, a picture comes up, of the compatible pcb, can't you just figure it out from that ?

Not quite. If you put in the exact version 018b, then it isn't compatible. Yeah the PCBs might look virtually the same, but even tiny changes will have an impact on the waterblock.

I've gone for an EK-Thermosphere (universal) now anyways. Bought a load of heatsinks for the VRMs etc.
