Amazon £10 free credit

I got an email saying Amazon gave me £10 credit to use in the App Store, supposedly for signing in to the app on my phone. When I hit it up, it told me I had to use a certain version of the app and tried to download an .apk file. I didn't bother as it seemed a bit suspect, I already have a perfectly good Amazon app that's showing no updates on the Play store.

Did I do a mistake or does anyone have knowledge on the matter? It was only for a few hours so has expired now.

The words come to mind now "if it's too good to be true it probably is" stay away from none legit apk apps if you like your android without malware.

That was my first thought, especially being rooted. I don't even install play store apps without freezing certain permissions so if it's unsolicited, chances are it will be binned.

What it's referring to is the amazon app store and not the google play store.

The app is was asking you to download is the amazon app store app and has no links to the actual amazon store app.

That could have been it, but I don't think so. The .apk is sat in my downloads (just remembered to delete it, never installed though) and the icon is exactly the same as the normal amazon app I already have. The filename is TAP_TO_INSTALL_AmazonApp_GB.apk.

EDIT: When I click the second option on that link on my PC, it says the website's certificate is invalid and may be a false website.

scam, you never install or downoad from random email's

Yeah that was my thought but I never clicked any links in it, I went right to Amazon from my bookmarks. I only stopped to think because it didn't tell me to go to xxxx page and download the app, it just tried to download it right away which is generally scammer behaviour. Strange that the real Amazon is giving me security warnings though.

check your browser/pc, scan etc... it might be infected

use kaspersy or somthing better also do an installed extensions check if u use chrome

HA! Use Chrome on a macbook. I like my legs without third degree burns. :D

Good point though, I should probably give it all the once over. What's the general consensus on things to use for OS X?

95% Sure you're confusing apps. Amazon has an app for shopping (on play) and one for their app re-selling (very much NOT on google play). The email was likely saying you need the latter and there you would get £10. This app would require you to override the "dont install apps from anywhere but play" warning.

The version of the appstore you need to use is the one from amazon themselves which doesn't use google pay but amazon pay (aka coins). You can get this very easily from here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/mas/get/androidapp (more instructions here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000714543&ref_=amb_link_175361507_4).

It could be a scam but considering amazon do this promotion a lot I'm fairly sure it was legit. Check the destination URLs, it probably is fine.

That fits with everything that's happened, it does seem a little irresponsible of them to go around security like that though. Certainly beat the hell out of me for a while, I knew they would make me use their App Store but never occurred they would do it like that.

Google does not enjoy competitors and bans all other stores that sell apps on it. Android has a default setting saying do not install apps from anywhere but play, this flag has to be enforced by default if you want to ship google apps on your phone iirc.

This is why the first instruction on the Amazon app store workflow is
Open Settings and find the Unknown sources option (under Applications or Security depending on your device).

They don't want to scare you off :)

Well I suppose there's always that one idiot who doesn't read or just plain misses the instructions. :o

Amazon app store is great. The free app a day is welcome.
That's how I got a hold of Monument Valley. One of the most beautiful and original mobile games ever made, gratis!

They also did a coin deal a while ago whereby downloading certain apps got you app store credit. I ended up with the equivalent of £22 worth, which I have hardly touched. Just waiting for whatever awesomeness deserves the spend.

If you mean the standalone app that gives you a free app then yes. This is a free app from inside Amazon's app store each day. Granted most are poo but there can be some gems.

I've seen it on there twice, it may come up again.

However it's definitely worth the moolah. I paid for the second part via in-app purchasing.
