Looking at a trip with my 14yr old daughter to New York for 10 days

Anyone recommend any cheapish hotels near Times Square?

Also is there anything to do outside of New York if I was to hire a car?

cheers:)

Drive to Boston and spend 3 days there would be my advice, if you must drive. Great city, great vibe and if you want to inspire her take her to MIT and Harvard. If you get into the back bay area you are surrounded by great bars and shops too and this time of the year the weather will be nice. About 4-5 hour drive from JFK, which is where I would hire from, get a cab from NYC.

There are no cheap hotels near Times Square – it’s probably one of the most expensive places to stay in the entire Continental USA. Even budget chains like Hampton by Hilton will run you north of £200 a night and they’ll be no better than the exact same hotel that’s £50 a night somewhere else – you are paying a massive premium for the location and nothing more.

10 days in New York is a long time, IMHO too long. Take Housey’s advice, expand the scope of this trip. Renting cars in and around New York is very expensive – the NYC area has the highest rental rates in the US – but renting cars elsewhere is cheap. So fly into Boston. Spend a few days there – it’s excellent. Rent a car. Drive down through Conneticut and New York State (Hotels in this area are cheap) and then drop the car off before spending 4-5 nights in New York itself. Then fly out of New York – all the major airlines will happily offer you open-jaw tickets into BOS and out of JFK or EWR.

You could even do Washington DC as well – 2 nights in Boston, 5 nights in New York, 3 nights in DC perhaps?

This means you see more *and* saves a fortune on hotel costs. I can’t think of a bigger waste of £2000+ than 10 nights in a hotel near Times Square. You can do so much more with this money than just that.

Don’t do the typical British tourist thing of spending your entire time going round and round New York City. It’s a fantastic city – but it’s just one fantastic city in a country full of fantastic cities.

Cheers guys

Yeah I was thinking nyc for ten days would be too long...Vegas did my head in after 4 lol

I'll look into things...I really just wanted to book flight and hotel though for ease...but I'll plan something more varied I think.

4-5 days in NY is plenty, don't stay near Times Square because it's noisy, busy and expensive. Even something a 10 min walk away is half the cost.

Boston was great, saw a Celtics game at TD garden, you've got the Sam Adams and Harpoon brewery tours (if you're into beer), Fenway Park, New England Aquarium and so on. Probably enjoyed it more than NY as it wasn't stuffed full of annoying tourists (hypocritical I know).

We stayed at the Seton Hotel in NY, 40th st between 3rd and Lexington. Its a good location right near Grand Central and about 15 minutes from Times Square and Empire State Building.
It's nothing flash but very reasonable, clean and friendly we paid about £80 a night for one with a bathroom as some have shared.
If I was going back I wouldn't hesitate to return.

Out of Manhattan, Philadelphia, Washington, Boston and Brooklyn, Boston was by far my favourite. Well worth a visit if you can, we flew for about $60 each from DC so it might be cheaper than that from NY.

I've booked the Pearl Hotel (Times Square) for New Year with the girlfriend. It came out as the cheapest in the immediate area surprisingly, but as this is potentially a proposal, I wanted something a little bit special. It scored highly from my intensive Googling, and we booked through Expedia ages ago.

Get on TripAdvisor and Google maps. Find a hotel you like the look of then find out where it is in relation to what you want to do. Compile a list of 6 or so and go from there. Good luck!

I looked at a one way flight from Manchester to NYC and it came in at 259 each?

Why can't it be right? That would be 518 return which is hardly cheap. You will find it difficult to get the same price the other way unless you use the return PIA flight as most airlines price single tickets at bonkers money, often more than a return.

Not even sure why you would mess about, just get a return?

For August it is!

Return is 2K from everyone else...Is it even possible to get a return from differing airports? wont let me on Virgin...

Why would you go in August? That's a terrible time to visit NYC, the heat can be hugely irritating and you pay bonkers money for everything. September is much better - there are return flights for just over £400 in September.

Loads of direct flights for under £1k in August though, you need to look a bit harder I think.

Top tip: Don't bother flying from Manchester. Hardly anyone bothers to fly to NYC from there and those that do tend to do so on crap planes anyway. Heathrow is where its at, there are dozens of daily flights from LHR to New York.

It will let you do Multi City on Virgin - click 'More Options' next to 'Return' and bingo, there it is.

Its the only time I can go...Its the two weeks mother has allocated me over the Summer Holidays

4th August to the 18th August

My daughter lives in Manchester...So I would drive over..Pick her up and go.

I'm a teacher so have time off over College holidays. Its the price you pat for having 7 weeks off this summer... 2 weeks off at christmas...2 weeks of at easter...countless halfterms etc...

My Vegas San Fran Fly drive trip couple years back was in August...I have no choice

Delta fly non-stop from Manchester on those dates for about £800. But the problem with Manchester is that nobody bothers to serve it properly transatlantic - Delta have one flight a day on a tiny little Boeing 757, a single aisle plane usually of the type you'd find going to Spain or Greece. Which if you honestly don't care is fine, but bear in mind I'm pretty sure they still have overhead TV's etc!

Nobody flies direct to Boston from Manchester.

From Heathrow you've so much more choice - you can get direct flights into Boston and out of New York on the dates you've given for about £950 with Virgin.

It's only a 3 hour drive to Heathrow.

I have a 2.5 hour drive to Manchester first though. I was going to get a taxi to the airport leaving my car outside mothers house.

Its just less hassle going from manchester...The last thing I want to do after a flight is have to drive 3Hrs to Mum then another 2.5 hrs to get home.

Amazingly it seems your luck is in - British Airways will fly from you Manchester to Heathrow, then Heathrow to Boston, then New York to Heathrow, then Heathrow to Manchester on your chosen dates for...

£800 return.

This is less than start/finishing from Heathrow! The world of airline pricing can be very annoying at times but in this case it benefits you.

I wouldn't worry about staying near Times Square to be honest with you - it's a great place to go and see, but you can stay anywhere in Manhattan and get there very easily.

Few places I've used and would recommend:

The Pod Hotels - great budget hotel. The rooms are small, but comfortable enough for two. You won't be spending that much time in your room anyway!

Herald Square Hotel - I prefer to stay nearer Herald Square (close to Penn Station/Macys/Empire State Building/Koreatown). It looks a bit old-fashioned, but the rooms are nice and the staff are very friendly.

Jazz Hostel - stayed in one of the older hostels, which has now closed down. If you're looking to stay on a budget, I'd recommend them. They do 2 bed dorms if you'd rather not share.

If you're doing a 10 day trip, there's a few things you can do outside of the city. Atlantic City has got a huge selection of outlet shops, plus a nice boardwalk out by the beach (weather depending!)

Niagara Falls is a great trip to do. Fly to Buffalo, then take a taxi to Niagara. There's not a whole lot to do there beyond the falls and the Skylon tower, the town itself is like an old seaside town (think amusement arcades, tacky museums and lots of knickknacks for tourists) - you could knock it out in a day if you left early.

Boston is only a few hours away - in terms of hotel pricing, it's very much on a par with New York, so you'll have to hunt for a bargain. I've not been myself, but friends have recommended it for a 2/3 day stay.

Did you choose Multi stop option?

I just tried it and it said none available...Maybe I'm doing it wrong :o
