What's a good watch for £400-£500?

Define 'Good'. Do you want it to accurately tell you the time or just want a highly over-priced status symbol?

Why do some people have to act like such idiots about others spending THEIR OWN money? Who cares if someone else wants to buy an expensive watch, suit, shoes, car or what ever.

It's cool to be an idiot.

4 to 5 hundred on a watch

Erm for that price I'd expect it do the dishes and the hoovering up for that much

£500 isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things.

It depends, do you have a specific make in mind? Do you want a dress watch, sports/diving watch, chronograph? Auto or quartz, bracelet or leather strap? so many variables and watches are a very personal thing where peoples tastes will vary wildly.

To be fair OP seems to be spending £500 for the sake of it rather than seeing something costing £500 that he actually wants:p

I am looking to buy a good watch for around £400-£500. Any thoughts?

Firstly, when you make threads like this in a forum you need to provide some more actual detail or people will make the snarky replies that you've seen.

Anyway, I am guessing you like the idea of having a watch but don't really have a clue where to start. Personally, for £500 I would be ONLY buying a Swiss watch. Christopher Ward is basically gradually trying to become a Swiss-priced watch manufacturer without any heritage, and you will probably feel no real sense of pride having it on your arm.

Personally I love (Swiss) dive watches, to me they just look manly, elegant, and the bonus is that they are incredibly rugged and stand well up to abuse, whether it be a drop on the floor or a dip in the ocean.

It may sound like I'm fixating on the Swiss thing, but to me it is pointless paying £500 for one of these Swiss-wannabe, created-in-the-last-decade-or-so companies that essentially peddle Swiss clones for not so far away from a good Tissot or sometimes even Longines. Certina also have some decent models. Buy from a brand with some history and class.

Basically just do some research, look at a lot of models, and find one which really catches your eye. Get it, even if it means spending 1 or 2 hundred more than the 500 limit, because that it what you will look at every day and if you love your watch then it's a really nice feeling. :)

What do you class as a 'good watch' ? I'd class a £30 watch which tells me the correct time, good.

Don't be a pedantic twit, it's obvious as to the gist of what he meant.

He wants inspiration for a watch and probably knows nothing about them, and he has the disposable income... people spend far more on PC components on a regular basis and no-one blinks an eyelid.

Are people actually questioning the monetary value?

I'm looking for a watch myself. I actually try not to look at the value.
Sometimes I like a 160 pound watch. Then I'll like a 1k one.
For me I'd set an upper limit but not a lower one. Otherwise you discount so many

What's with all the deleted posts?

Bingo. I don't really mind if people want to make snarky comments. I intentionally did not give more detail as I wanted to keep all options on the table.
I was curious to see if people had any fantastic watches that I should know about in that price range.
Not looking to spend much more than £400-£500 as I don't want haute horology to compromise my marriage. lol

I had my eyes on something like this for a while now http://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/Tissot-Visodate-Mens-Watch/p/17360569/.

I can also get 10% off on this (corporate discount) which makes it even more appealing.
