8th July Budget

Why would they refuse? Is there a financial reason for refusing? Do you get more employee rights on longer hours?

My gf had the same happen to her. On zero hours, meant to share 40hours with another. Other employee left, asked her manager for full 40 hours, declined under "what happens if you are sick/go on holiday".

I suspect there is some sort of incentive for a company to only offer low hours. A new Sainsburys has just opened here and all the jobs seem to be under 20 hours a week!

Pretty much this. More of us to cover sixckness/holidays

It does make me laugh. Gideon thinks that cutting tax credits will force wages up?

No it wont. Simple as. Workers like MeatLoaf will be in trouble and that's just not fair.

Exactly. This is why the likes of Tesco and Asda have 25 supervisors for every shelf stacker.

A lot of retailers are massively reducing what they will pay new supervisors, management staff, etc. (often increasing their responsibilities into the bargain) - typical for a store manager job ad around here at the moment to be 20-25K basic, upto 35K with experience when it wasn't long ago it was ~30K basic and well into the 40s with decent experience.

London is currently the preserve of the wealthy and the poor, especially in some areas. You are not going to solve the housing costs in London even by building as there isn't the land to do it. Benefits trap the poor in London, unable to increase their earnings because they won't be able to afford to live without the subsisidy. Is that traps really the best thing for people?

So your solution is to slash benefits?

We prefer that you call it 'free the poor from being tied down to one spot by pesky things such as a home and possessions'.
