Sunday Trading

Don't really see why there would be a problem with this?

Quite frankly if I worked in retail and worked a Sunday, I would be sure that I would rather work a full day than the 5.5 hours I'd get on a 'traditional' Sunday, hardly even worth going in.

Quite a few people employed in retail are typically mothers (a good percentage single parent) who often don't have a lot of other avenues for employment and Sunday is their main family day so they'd rather work less hours than more if they have to work it on their shift rotation.

Great news! Every Sunday there's something I need after 4!

Although the downside is tesco etc. is going to kill off the small local shops

Not the case of living in a bubble. Family life is being destroyed by sunday working!

No it isn't, my family life is great. Your view is only the way it is because you believe in the Bible. Not everyone believes in the Bible, and it's in quite poor taste to assert that not adhering to your Bible views means that family life is being destroyed, that is utter nonsense.

I work part time at ASDA whilst at uni and I can't remember the last time the store reached the sales plan on a Sunday. I doubt opening longer would solve this as might be thought obvious. All that will happen is yet more money is expended (utilities, wages, etc) than what is gained in sales. Most people are only doing small basket shops or the odd few items.

Pretty pointless.

You'll probably find that the lights are on and the chillers are going regardless of if the store is open. There would be staff working well outside the normal opening hours anyway re-stocking the shelves and taking delivery's, doing in-store baking etc.

When I worked at a popular fast food place, we used to have 4-5 staff on to 2AM cleaning the place even though we closed at 12. The morning shift would turn up at 4AM to prepare for 5AM opening. When we moved to a 24/7 operation we only needed 3 staff after 1AM to 6AM to do the necessary so it actually didn't cost that much more to open 24/7. The utility cost was negligible compared to the total cost per year.

I would strongly disagree - coming from a fairly big family the dynamic has totally changed since many of us moved from mon-fri to 5 in 7 shift rotations, etc. even though most of us have moved out/spread out geographically we'd see a lot more of each other at the weekends than we ever do now.

I'm not a big one for traditions but I think its one of the few traditions that should be retained.

Trolling? I opened the thread.

It's clear you're taking issue with this due to your views of Sunday being the day of rest.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say, could you elaborate on it?

I don't really think there is such a thing as small local shops any more, Tesco Express et al killed them all a long time ago. There generally just a much better experince as well as cheaper, more selection, most even have fresh bakery products.

Even your local 'corner shop' are now Londis, CostCutter etc which are normally big franchises these days.

I was curious if he had dealings with you before, making it obvious you do indeed believe in the Bible.

I believe it's pretty common for Sunday to be a day amongst family (mine doing very little!). I don't doubt it has religious roots but the connotation is largely in your own head.

There's quite a few of the small independent shops in my area that seem to be doing good enough, as they've been open for years.

I'm saying there are a lot less times our lives happen to converge as a family now that many of us are working shift patterns that involve weekend days, etc. than we used to when we were all working monday to friday jobs and personally I don't think that is a good thing.

Why do shift workers always whinge about how crappy it is? I used to work shifts now have a 9-5, shift work sucks! if you don't like shifts get a mon-fri job and stop crying about how hard it is working weekends
