Hi,

As some of you may remember from my thread, I recently bought and returned a 295x2 from the OCUK b-grade section (it didnt work :().

At £400 I thought this was a pretty good deal and for the 1 hour that it worked I was blown away by the performance.

Since it was broken and I had to return it, and with it being clearance stock they couldn't exchange for another one - so I'm sat here with the £400 not really knowing what to do.

I game at 2560x1440 and really prefer to be able to turn everything up to the max settings. Obviously with the 295x2 I could do this.

£400 is probably my limit as far as budget goes. I could stretch to £500 and start looking into FuryX and 980ti territory, but I really don't want to (unless I have to) if I'm honest. I need to draw the line somewhere.

The only problem is that I can't seem to find anything to fill my needs at this butget. Maybe I'm being too picky and wanting 295x2 performance for £400. Now that I've had a taste I want more :D lol

I did look at buying a 295x2 new to be honest at £515. But after trying Witcher 3 and jumping through a bunch of hoops and still seeing some flickering textures I'm not sure that I want go down that road. The R9 390 seems like a nice little card (and cheap) but I'm not sure that its got the grunt for 1440p, and the 390x doesn't seem worth the premium over the 390!

The GTX980 maybe?...I don't know.

I don't think buying another 7970 and cross-firing is an option with the 2nd slot on my board only being 4x. Maybe worth a punt though?

Long story short. I clearly need help

Thanks!

I would hang on a week for the fury non x reviews it should be roughly 400 and will handle that res no problem. That or a 980/390 for slightly less.

Ii would save up the extra and go 980Ti. I have 7970 xf which is good but hot and for some probably too noisy. I would only recommend it if you intend to wait for Pascal. I'll upgrade to a single card middle of next year. Not because of issues just because I think I'll only need one at 1440p.

Nothing wrong with the 980 mate. Especially if you have a hard limit on the cash front your willing to stump up.

You can go sli later and the 4gb is plenty for 1440.

Not really. Not if you're buying a new card today. Dying Light, GTAV and Shadows of Mordor already go past that.

I would go for the ti. It actually has a great price/performance ratio for an high end solution.

It's a tough one and I'd agree with you thinking the 295X2 on being a good choice.

I'm running a 7990 at 1440P currently and there really is not a lot that seems a significant boost without spending silly money (looking at you 980Ti).

He said he could stretch to 500 but didn't want to. And his previous thread also suggested he really didn't want to go above 400.

Its easy to recommend the best. But if he is relutant why not give him suitable options for 1440..if he is happy with 60hz..what's wrong with a 400 card?

If he finds it on the mm or ebay, by all means. But I wouldn't spend 80% of the ti value, for a card that is likely to incur in vram issues at 1440p :D
And I thought the Vram thing was exaggerated, until I ditched the 970.

Not too bad, but 4GB is not something worth investing for the future (and this is just the way I think of course, better to wait even a month for the extra 100£, than having an inferior product for a whole year).

R9 290 second hand would be the best bet to hold you over till a die shrink but if you want more power then it would have to be either the GTX 980ti or Fury.

Basically, you can try and find another cheap 295x2 or some cheap 290/x's to CF. Besides that, there's really no other alternative for your budget. Truth is, even a 980 ti will run into troubles at 1440p, so it's not like if you get one it's all going to be fine and dandy, i.e. you'll still have to sacrifice either quality or fps.

I ran a 980 at 1440 before I got my Titan X and Ultra wide monitor.
Nothing phased the 980 at max settings.
I've still got it and I'm using it in my linux/Steam PC that I'm building. I just couldn't bring myself to sell it as it's more than capable.
If you can get one second hand then even better.

I can max pretty much everything when Xfire is working well. Though witcher3 I can't have msaa. I wouldn't recommend a 7990 though, mines water cooled so the worst aspects aren't a problem (heat and noise) but Xfire is annoying especially with AMDs haphazard attitude to driver updates.

its ok I dont mind that much with msaa, msaa in w3 causes serious suttering.

What monitor are you using? I am thinking of upgrading to 1440p but struggle to pay so much for fury x / 980ti PLUS 1440p free / gsync monitor, so maybe a normal 1440p will be a better option

That's what worries me about trying to find a good deal on a 295x2. I spent a good while with the witcher trying to sort out flickering textures, and even though it was running at pretty much 60fps fully maxed out there were still some bits of flickering in certain areas. I could see that getting old very fast.

I've got a Dell U2515H, cheap, no frills, great IPS panel.
