Hi,

I've Just bought a brand new car , one of the extras my wife wanted fitting was Sat Nav £999. Its a kenwood unit and as I drove home I noticed that the maps were out of date.

When I went to update it Garmin wanted £50. So I rang Kenwood to see why it was out of date only to be told that they had stopped making that stereo 2 years ago!!!

What are peoples thoughts about this I feel conned !

I rang the dealer who first reaction was that they would pay the £50 to upgrade the maps.

Since then they have offered to upgrade the unit to another one which is a newer model but still discontinued. Its been superseded twice more since then.

Should I just take this unit? the latest version of it to buy from Kenwood is £544 but then the guy at the garage said that the wiring loom was £300 so it work from the steering wheel then half a days work to remove the dash board to fit it. Is this just Bulls$£t?

On top of all this it would be a 114 mile round trip and half a day off work.

What would you do, thoughts !

Cheers

I would be really annoyed after spending over £800 for a old, out of date Sat Nav, especially after the money you already spent on the new car.

I would be returning the unit and asking for my money back. I bet you can pick it up online a lot cheaper and there not hard to fit either.

Check this place out http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/

Yeah the car was 24k that's why I feel so ripped off.

Would the dash need removing? Is this £300 Wiring loom a con?

If they're just using off-the-shelf units, for £24k I'd expect it to be coming with the newest possible. Contact Ssang-Yong direct and complain.

Replacing one standard head unit with another won't require a new loom or fascia, it's a straight swap and probably an hours work at most

However I'd just push them to pay for the map update unless you have anything in writing saying you would get the latest unit. You rarely get brand new nav systems in new cars anyway as they're more integrated in bigger brands

But if you'd paid £800 for an out of date system you'd be pretty ****** surely? How much is a top of the line stereo these days? Plus fitting I doubt it'd get to £800.

Depends what was agreed! £800 for a nav system as an option on a new car is bargain basement cheap so I wouldn't expect much. A top of the line nav system will stretch way beyond £800 fitted anyway, that's mid range money at best.

I might be disappointed but I'd also want to know exactly what it is I was paying for - if they've just agreed to fit sat nav then they've done that so I don't really see the fuss. He paid for sat nav, he's got sat nav - unless there's something in the order that suggests it should be any more than it is...

Yes there are better systems out there and yes they're cheaper than £800 but he could have bought one from caraudiodirect and had it fitted if it was important.

To be honest, if they've offered to upgrade maps, I'd just take the offer and go for it.

The problem with these things is that they bring out new models all the time. The car manufacturer most likely had a large pile of old stock to go through, they can't be republishing all the promotional material every time a new model comes out.

Looking at the SsangYong website, they have list it as

Kenwood touch-screen Sat Nav DAB CD/DVD with iPod & Bluetooth connectivity

So I'm not sure what part the OP feels hasnt been delivered

But if your car is a 2 year old model (irrespective of the registration date), then I'm not sure what you would expect.

Yes I can imagine it's annoying but I don't see that you've been misled, you've got exactly what you paid for and the dealer is (rightly) offering to help which they don't have to)

According to the dealer its the 2015-20?? model that's just been released.

and why all of a sudden can they fit a newer version?

built in satnavs are known to be horrendously outdated, Not sure why you paid the extra tbh. A standalone or even a mobile phone will likely have more upto date maps system thats updated more often.

Updating the maps would be a 114mile round trip nor half a day off work ;)

I'd just accept the £50 for the map updates and see if they can chuck in a free service or something

I spoke to kenwood as the maps on it were out of date to find what to do, they informed me that it was discontinued two years ago.The DNX4250DAB is the current version.

We've established its not the latest model.

However, what do you have in writing to say you would be delivered the latest model? You paid for an sat nav, you got an sat nav.
