PC went POP!

I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips to help diagnose an issue with my PC.

The machine has been working fine for a good few months without any hardware issues to speak off but last night randomly while sitting on the desktop it just powered down. Since then the PC won't boot.

The motherboard is getting power and seems happy enough (no red LEDs etc) but when trying to power the machine it lasts half a second then powers off. I've tried unplugging everything possible leaving just the CPU and motherboard but it is producing the same results.

I'm guessing the PSU has died? I've not seen one die that still outputs power though usually they truly go pop and that is the end of it! Or could it be something shorting the machine? I'm not sure what would be causing that considering nothing has moved and it has been working fine for months.

Any advice from your experiences would be great :D

I'm going to borrow a PSU from work to check to see if that works, just wondering if there is anything else I should be looking out for?

It's a 3 year old 750W PSU running an i7, AMD 290 and 5 HDDs.

Last time a saw an issue like this was at a customers house, they had gone through 3 PC's in the space of 5 years. It turns out the power to the PC had some strange surge spikes which killed the PSU and in turn the motherboard.
Is your PC connected through a surge protector and when you get the PSU test to see if it works as it sounds like a similar issue.

Thanks for the advice guys.

It is going through a rather cheap power extension that claims it is surge protected. Nothing else connected seemed to have any issue then the PC went off.

I'll give it a test with the new PSU on a surge protected plug. Thanks again!

Phew! Seems like it was just the power pack, the one I'm borrowing has worked a treat in getting it back up and running :D

I'll have to order a replacement PSU tomorrow!

Thanks for all the info guys :)
