144hz = no screen tearing?

Hi. Tomorrow I am buying a Asus VG278HE monitor at 144hz. To run this at 144hz in games has vsync got to be turned off and if so will I still get screen tearing as I do now if I turn it off. also if vsync is on I get really bad slowdown. I have a 970GTX so would 144hz monitor get rid of this problem. Thanks.
 
You can run it with vsync off but a frame limiter set to 143hz, that might help minimise tearing but wont eliminate it entirely

It sounds like what you really want is a gsync monitor, which will let you run with vsync off but also eliminate tearing

You can run games at 144hz with vsync on though
 
You technically don't need to turn vsync off to run at 144Hz, but you'd have to have an incredibly powerful machine to maintain a constant 144 FPS in all games. If you do use vsync and you can't maintain 144Hz, it will drop to half, third, quarter etc. of the refresh rate depending on how many frames are being output.

If you turn vsync off, tearing will still be visible but may be less noticeable than on a 60Hz monitor. This is due to smaller differences between the top and bottom halves of the frame (because of the faster refresh rate).

As you are buying new and have an nVidia card have you considered a g-sync monitor? G-sync is a good solution, but comes with a hefty price premium.

Alternatively, look into vsync + triple buffering - it's a bit of a pain to enable and requires 3rd party utilities for most DirectX games, but it does improve vsync performance when your GPU can't maintain FPS at the monitor's refresh rate.

Yeah gsync that bit much at the moment. Any way do gsync monitors have to have a NVidia card and not amd so if I wanted to change if I did get a gsync I couldn't at a later date?.

I have a I7 3770k, 8GB ram 750PSU, Asus H61m-k mobo. I need a new tv/monitor any way as the tv at the moment is causing the shimmer and ghosting effect. it even does it on my consoles. I also tried it on another monitor and is fine.

That's correct G-Sync only works with NVidia cards, and AMD's competing Freesync only works with AMD cards. Freesync monitors are an awful lot cheaper than g-sync though.

TBH, if you are coming from using a TV as a monitor then the monitor you are looking at will perform much better.

Thanks for that. That one thing what has been putting me off a gsync. Yeah at the moment I am using a sony bravia 32" KDL-32EX703 and think its had it day. I am definitely buying it tomorrow but another thing that is worrying me will it be too small from a TV to a monitor been 27" as monitors are smaller in them self's also and not as bulky even though this TV is a Flat its still quite big on my desk. Cant wait to order it.
 
Minimising the perception of tearing is a little hit and miss and I'm not sure off hand what works best for 144Hz - with 120Hz I find capping at 125fps gives minimal noticeable tearing not sure how well it would work with 144.
 
How close do you sit to the TV/monitor? The TV may be physical larger but the monitor will likely provide a better picture in addition to the faster refresh rate. The only downside is that if you sit a long way from it and/or have poor eyesight text may appear a little small.



The gsync will also only have a single input - not sure if that's an issue for the OP (ruled it out for me at the time).

Thanks. But there too many option for graphics as it is. So I think I will stick with the asus monitor. My mother board is a asus and also my card is asus so might as well get an asus monitor so no conflicts. lol.

Well your money but i know which monitor i would pick out of the asus and the aoc:p £20 extra for gysnc and 144hz;)

Then it comes down to whether the OP would prefer 1080p with gsync vs 1440p with no gsync. The gsync will also only have a single input - not sure if that's an issue for the OP (ruled it out for me at the time).

The OP would have no hope of driving 1440@144hz with a 970 anyway
 
Ordered this morning the Asus VG278HE. Cant wait. Only problem I found with this as it only got 1 HDMI port on the monitor and wanted to put console on it too but will have to buy a small 1080p tv for cheap some time. :)

What about 1080p ultra graphics at 144hz?. Also what option in NVidia control panel as it says in specs. 50htz, 85hz 100hz and the 144hz. On my TV in NVidia control panel I have.

My mistake, I looked at the wrong model :(.

In that case, yes the 1080p gsync is certainly a comparitively good buy but still only has a single input.

The correct refresh rates will appear in one in the nVidia control panel when you plug your new monitor in.

Huh just connect the console to the monitors HDMI input and then connect the pc via the DVI-D connector this is the only way you can get 144hz anyway:p
 
144Hz =/= no screen tearing

screen tearing happens any time your gfx card is trying to render more fps than ur monitor can show. so if you have v-sync off, and ur gfx card is trying to do 144+ fps, you will still get tearing.

vysnc forces the gfx card to match the monitor frame rate.

I've never experienced any issues with input lag with vsync enabled on any monitor, so never turn it off :3

Tearing is simply down to a lack of synchronisation between GPU and monitor. It also occurs if the frame rate dips below the refresh rate. The screen will often display partial frames during its refresh cycle if the frame rate is 'too low' not just 'too high'. :)
