Hi all,

Anyone got any experience of renting a BMW/Mercedes/Audi in Orlando?

Quite a few companies around, wondering if anyone has done it and if they can recommend anyone in particular.

Thanks!

I rent cars in the US each year.

Why do you particularly want one of these - generally speaking unless you want to pay an absolute fortune you are going to end up with a 328i or a C250 or something which are hardly worth paying big money for. Infact I actively avoid these two cars on rental lots as they are generally poor specification as the rental firm's believe the badge appeal is sufficient.

Your best bet is to either:

a) Rent a Luxury class car with Alamo/National. This will give you something like a BMW 328i, Cadillac ATS or similar (IMHO the Cadillac is a better car than the 3 Series and thats coming from a BMW owner
b) Rent an XCAR category vehicle with Sixt. XCAR is generally a BMW 5 Series or a Mercedes E Class.

Your cheapest and most convenient rate for Alamo/National will be through Virginholidays.co.uk I would imagine - the rate is fully inclusive of all insurance. For SIXT, use the SIXT UK website (http://www.sixt.co.uk) which will also include all the insurance you need. Beware that SIXT has strict territorial limits, you can't take it more than one state out of Florida.

I have never found it worth paying the prices rental firms tend to want for something like a 5 Series, even though I own one myself.

Don't get ripped off just because you crave a shiny badge. The domestic cars are just as fun if not more so on a US holiday. I always aim for a Cadillac when I'm renting, the current range is absolutely excellent and it just feels more fun to have an American car in America.

SixT are cheap and have no young person surcharge if you're under 24.

Get something American as Fox says, will always be cheaper... although I was still happy to get my SLK350 for 190quid for a week

No use for cruising around but I'd like to try a Tesla for a bit too, just to see what it's all about, I'm not anti petrol/gas.

This is going to plague me in every car hire thread for ever isn't it :D

Context: He rented something else and they were out of cars so had to upgrade him, you cannot generally rent SLK's for £190 a week :p

Yes, yes it is :p

I could have had the Aveo I'd originally gone for! but this was $20 a day extra :P

frankly I'd want a Mustang convertible if I was on holiday somewhere sunny in 'merica

Horrible cars. I rented one a yr ago for a drive down to the keys for my 10yr anniversary. All we could do is pick faults at it. Designed from the outside in, with no logic or common sense applied. Gimme a German car any day of the week compared to one of those POS ! Drove like crap too ! Also OP is going to FL, in summer time... You'll want a roof and the AC on full blast, otherwise you'll be sweating like a pig. Sitting at red light after red light cooking (there's enough of 'em in Orlando)

I did the Mustang thing once in California to tick the 'Highway 1 in a convertible' box. It was fun, but the fact I've not done it again since tells you what I generally think of them :D

As someone else has already done, rent something cheap then upgrade when you are at the counter.....99% of the time you'll get a much better deal as they usually work on commission and give you great discount. That's what I usually do.
Rent something like an Infiniti, but guess they are out in England nowadays?

Or ask if you get an insurance discount (through your provider).

This is a good option for people like yourself who live in the USA but not for us Brits. All US rentals booked in the UK through a reputable broker or direct will include all insurance with zero excess at rates far below those offered to US citizens. There is simply no need to worry about insurance with US rentals now when booked from this country - it's a non issue. You'd be amazed at some of the fully inclusive rates - they are so cheap that your upgrade option probably isn't a good idea either, even a bargain upgrade is likely more expensive than booking that car in the first place.

I've no idea why but we get excellent deals on US hire. My next rental - a Luxury - is under $45 a day fully inclusive of all insurance :D

Sorry Fox, I meant like a discount through your insurance for the rental (not the insurance).
For instance, we needed a replacement car for a week or so. Hired a Ford Explorer which was about $70 per day. However, my insurance Geico, have a deal set up with Enterprise which made it about $25 per day. Which, I tried to search and couldn't find anything coming close to match it.
So from now on, I'll just say it's through Geico and a car rental replacement (hopefully).

UK car insurance isn't going to provide discounted USA car rental. The most you can hope for is some generic 10% off code, unfortunately.

I rented this

And it was the best bit of my holiday
