1440p card...

Guys, please, lay off the smokes. You won't come even close to maxing out games at 1440p without at least a 980 ti but in some cases not even with that (e.g. Crysis 3, DA:I, Witcher 3, etc.)

And forget about tweaks & mods, 'cause things start heating up even more then. Not to mention that in many cases you see these benchmarks that seem to indicate that they'd fare well at 1440p only to look more closely and realise they're not even using the most advanced settings or even MSAA.

I can run witcher 3 at ultra (1440p) between 40 - 48fps. That is with a 970, so a 980Ti will have no hassle.

I am really tempted to go for a 980ti to be honest. Can anyone advise me on the outright fastest variants and which might be the best price/performance? The g1 gaming looks a bit special lol.

get a 980ti, its the most sensible option.

if you want a 3rd party variant get the G1, but i think they should all be fine. im using 2 reference cards and their perfectly fine even at stock

I would say right now, the only single GPU solution would, be the 980ti, but only just. The Titan X is just a waste of money as the 980ti will do the same job and even better if you get one of the many overclocked custom cooled versions. The Fury X in my opinion isnt a viable alternative as it is significantly slower at 1440p, yet costs not much less. If you must have AMD, then it is your only option though. The 980 is fine, but be prepared to lower some settings or get sub 60fps.

On my 980ti I can play most games at near max settings and achieve 60fps min fps at 1440p. I say near max settings, but that is only due to turning off crazy stuff like SSAA, or some settings that cause wierd stuttering, like for example the soft shadow setting in FC4. Not saying its perfect and I'm sure there's quite a few games that will drag it to its knees with absolute maximum settings, but on the whole I am able to play at 1440p with very little if any compromise.

Well for me to get the witcher 3 to run between 50-90 fps on ultra at 1440p I have 2 AIO cooled kaf2 gtx980s ocd to their max. Gta V ultra I get between 49-70. So 1440p ultra settings still takes a lot of gpu umph

To be honest by this point I'm pretty much set on a 980ti and I'm just wondering which one to get. If I'm gonna be spending over £500 I want to make sure its the best/right one for me. I don't see the point in trying to save money when I've already thrown the budget out of the window :D

Gigabyte G1 or MSI 6G. I have bought the Msi, but haven't installed it yet.

Mate I wouldn't rack your brains too much. The difference between these OC cards in terms of real game performance is miniscule.

The G1 got a reputation of beasting everything out there because it was the first card available here with a high OC. Now there are several cards all within 20MHz of each other (Strix, MSI 6G etc) on the advertised boost clock you are looking at one or two fps difference. You are going to get mind blowing performance out of any of them, the biggest difference will be temps and noise.

I have to say on the newegg feedback a lot of owners have had bad coil whine on the G1 and quite a few in the 980Ti owners thread, one person right now is pondering whether to RMA it. That is a bit of a lottery though because there are some G1 owners who have reported no coil whine and you can get it from other manufacturers too depending on luck/design.

I see. I didn't know it was such a small difference between them.

I did read about the G1 having coil whine actually, which is a bit of an issue :(

The MSI one seems good, haven't really heard any complaints about it anywhere I've seen people mention it.

The MSI Gaming is brilliant for me and the quietness is much appreciated. I do feel the G1 has slightly lower load temps because the fans have a much higher rpm ceiling (+4000rpm vs 2200rpm) than the MSI. But I'm very happy with the minimal noise and no coil whine which is a good balance with the performance.
