Which GFX card to go for

I've just been reading some reviews and some people are saying the zotac gives some coil whine - wonder if many of them are affected

I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for a better brand 970 - don't want any coil whine

Any brand can suffer from coil whine. I've not noticed any coil whine with my Zotac 980 Ti AMP, but there's a very small amount coming from my girlfriends Zotac 980 (non-Ti) AMP... nothing really noticeable though and it usually goes away after a while (as it did with her old Gigabyte R9 280X and my old KFA2 GTX 780).

Coil whine is normally associated with high fps but not always and it does not effect performance.

I think you sholud put the extra up for the msi, it's regarded as one of the quietest and coolest 970s.

Temperatures are excellent. With the fans at a complete stop in idle (which is awesome), slightly higher idle temperatures are normal (and comparable to Palit and ASUS which also stop their fans).

During gaming, temperatures are better than on any other GTX 970 we have tested before, and since the MSI GTX 970 is also one of the quietest GTX 970s, its cooler is probably one of the best.
