Guys just after a little feedback ... upgraded from a MSI 980 to 980ti and the ti has noticeably more coil whine then the 980. Anyone know what msi are like with regards to getting this swapped out or am i better just returning under DSR and reordering ?

Ok i decided to try a new psu, been meaning to upgrade my old 700W psu from 2008 eek
Have gone over kill for evga 1000W p2 as i plan to do mutli gpu later if all goes well. Will see if power is the cause , however running the card the noise has dropped some so if the power supply can calm it a bit more then i will be happy.

That's not true at all.

If the coil whine is definitely coming from the card (not the PSU etc) and is intrusive whilst gaming (quite audible outside the case), not talking about using benchmarking software either. Then you're well within your rights to return the card for testing, as it might well be faulty.

I fully understand that it might not be classed as defective. But i cant accept the fact that i have gone from a MSI 980 to an MSI 980 TI as i expect the same quality if not better in all aspects. Not a card that screaches in my ear over the other sounds from my pc while costing me more.

But as i have said if has calmed down and if the changes i am making improve this further then all is fine. Time will tell as new psu will arrive today.

Good news is the ti was not from overclockers as i had vouchers from work to use up ( yay ) so only cost me 450 for the ti ...phew

Try running the card in for a week or so, hammering games and that, it could well calm down. If not after a week there's no improvement I'd return the card for testing. No new decent PSU is going to fix a screamer (if that's what you're experiencing). But yeah, try ragging the backside out of the card (with no overclocks) in games and see if that fixes it.

To all who are interested ... installed the EVGA PSU this evening and fired up my go to game (Elite). During the menu screen i would easily see 600 fps listed, It was on this screen you could clearly hear the noise from the GPU. I am happy to say the EVGA PSU has cleared up all of my worries. I was not expecting a night and day difference but i got one. I think its safe to say my old psu had seen better days, glad i decided to upgrade it !!!.

Nice. A lot of times the as you have experienced the noise may seem to come from the gpu, but it originates from the psu or the weakest link in the chain.

my msi 980ti had it but it went away after a few hours..
 
Mine has a little. Seems to be on the menus of pcars.

Can't hear it during gsming , and it isn't really annoying. I'm sure severity varies.

Not bothered.

My card is squealing as my games beat it. As it should.

I had 3 x Infin8 970s, all as you know have glued Inductors to vastly reduce / eliminate coil whine. Each of mine screamed like nothing, this was with a Superflower 1000w Platinum PSU. Sent each one back and Gibbo himself tested them and he agreed they screamed and could be heard over 6ft away.

So to the OP, good outcome with having the PSU sorting the issue. It's not always the case though, like I say, If you have a dodgy card no new PSU will fix it.

I agree, I am sure their are many who do have a genuine issue with some cards. I think the main point to take away from this is if you are sure you have a psu which is more than capable to drive these cards, and you still have coil whine to a level which creates an annoyance, then you have good grounds to question if it should be replaced.

I used to repair TVs for a living. We used to get a few in for repair that had coil whine. It was often caused by the linearity coil or the line output transformer. I never said to a customer "that's no reason to have it repaired, your TV is not faulty".

Coil whine might be a "hazard" of owning a high end graphic card, but to expect paying cutomers to put up with coil whine is not really good enough. Unless of course there is a clear disclaimer in the product description or at the point of sale which explains that coil whine is not covered by the warranty.
