How in The name of God, can you run up a Million+ bill on a "He Said, She Said" Case??

So the CPS decided not to proceed with the case but the Judge at the libel trials says she is telling the truth.

Can of worms.

Ms Ward's lawyer's later estimated the amount to be around £400,000 plus a 100 per cent win fee and VAT, totalling around £960,000.

wtf 100% win fee

MW

What is a 'win fee' and who collects it? Surely they have an hourly rate and they present a bill, what justifies the extra 100% on top of that?

Burden of proof is much lower in these kind of cases. Still... would like to see what 'evidence' there was seeing as the groping took place ~40 odd years ago.

Well, How????

At the "Legal Aid" rates that were being discussed elsewhere recently, this represents over 20,000 Man Hours!

That is one bloke working full time for over 10 years! (And with no time off for sickness/holidays/whatever)

I want that fully itemised!

Apparently he said he'd never met her and video evidence suggested he did. I'd hardly call that proof though considering I can't even remember a single customer I served in the last 12 hours, let alone some random woman from decades ago being a star who'd have met thousands upon thousands of people in that year alone most likely.

Maybe he had no recollection of meeting her, just think about the sheer amount of people celebrities meets during their career.

Quite!

Its like Fords saying

"Well we actually managed to fix your problem so we are going to charge you double what we initially quoted you"

Anyway, back to my OP

£400,000 is still a staggering sum of money for a case that I cannot really see taking much more than a morning

(How long did it take? And why??)

EG

Case starts 09:00Hrs

09:05 Starr: "She said I tooted her hooters. I deny it!"

09:10 Defendant: "He so tooted my Hooters, I have witnesses too!"

(I believe she did have two supporters)

09:15 (Witness1) "He tooted my Hooters too!"

09:20 (Witness 2) "And He tooted mine!"

09:30 In the light of this evidence I find Starr guilty of tooting Hooters 40 years ago and I am going to award the defendants lawyers £1,000,000 in costs!

Really!

(There is a reason why lawyers seem to be universally hated!)

Judging by that pic, Freddie's age doesn't relate to his image. He looks ill or dare I say it, struggling with an addiction or something.

I think what's happened to him in recent years has taken a terrible toll. A damning testament to how operation Yewtree really did hurt innocent people.

She was represented by a QC, so fees are are £2d20 per minute rather than the usual £2d6.

Legal fees are randomly determined, right? They seem to be made up.
