Read this and you may never want to eat a ready meal again!

I can only give it four stars rather than five though because husband is in medical school and he says her investigative reporting is top level and EVERYONE needs to know the information about the food industry contained in the book (I agree) but he says her nutritional science information is not up to the same level and in some cases is ill informed or ill advised which makes it difficult for a person educated in the subject to take the rest of the book seriously

From one of the reviews.

To eloborate what haggisman said above, shopping around and cooking from scratch can be cheaper, better for you, tastes nicer and gives you the reassurance there is nothing dodgy in there.

I never really had the time to cook and prepare food properly/from fresh until a couple of years ago so yeah quick ready meals were convenient, but now I always cook from fresh, my meat always come from the butchers and fresh veg etc is always purchased. I do buy frozen veg as well just to keep as extras as it obviously lasts longer....

I have a few mates that survive on ready meals. It makes me sad but it suits their lifestyle. Like all things there are degrees of quality. If you buy cheap you eat crap. Unless you want to survive on inhumane chicken and veggies.

Can't be bothered buying or reading the book, could you post some of the main aspects that have put you off?

And you may even look at "Fresh" food with a more critical eye!

So either starve or grow our own vegetables and raise our own livestock to slaughter?

Don't eat ready meals myself but I will buy the ones that are cuts of meat with a bag of sauce (pork and apple or hunters chicken etc) that you just put in the oven for 30mins. They seem pretty good.

Not into microwave meals though, once had a lasagne as pictured in previous post and it smelled worse than dog food. I actually feed my dog better than that and it's meant for human consumption

They add animal genitalia to certain ready meals to pass off as meat, some of the ones that include pasta like Lasagna, isn't actually pasta it's sheets of plasterboard mixed with a bit of water and flour. Veggies are actually plastic etc etc.

I believe it's also customary for the quality control person to spit in each pack before it's sealed. Similar to the man from Del monte saying 'yes' but with a good, well hawked spit.

I used to work in the food industry and stopped eating this a LONG time ago!! It's just as easy to prepare your own with fresh ingredients. Tastes a hell of a lot better too!

I think if we banned bread and cheese we'd be a hell of a lot healthier. Sure cheese is good for you and nutritious... it's just impossible for average joes with no control (like me) to eat a quantity that doesn't spiral your calorie intake into the stratosphere :p

Love cheese

As someone who lives on ready meals and processed crap I might give this a read.

^^

Who in their right mind eats these things in the first place?

Yes, I'm curious on why it attracts them. Is it because it requires no effort? Is it truly pure laziness or a mix of everything.

Merovingian: Something to eat? Drink? Of course these things are contrivances, like so much here, for the sake of appearances.
Neo: No thankyou.
Merovingian: Yes, of course. Who has time? Who has time? But then if we never *take* time, how can we have time?

I actually like the taste of ready meals. I usually have the mexican ones etc but from M&S and so on not something from asda smart price. They are convenient and store well for the single man :p

So what sort of things does the book actually say.

Me I have only once had a ready meal in my life (that I know of) and it was not all that nice

I stopped eating them after reading the packaging more carefully on a Tesco curry. Although the front of the packet boasted it was prepared in the UK. The rubbery tasting chicken was actually sourced in Thailand.

Errmm, I wonder what quality and welfare standards the chicken is produced at to make it financially viable to ship from the other side of the world and still make a profit?

Read the reviews, they seem just as hilarious as the book itself.

I can only imagine everyone say there reading in their tin foil hats.

Nothing wrong with the odd ready meal. There are ready meals and there are ready meals. The expensive ones in supermarkets are actually very tasty and made from quality ingredients. It's the budget ready meals that have a lot of crap in them.

Everything in moderation isn't going to harm you. I wouldn't condone living on ready meals alone but the occasional one, certainly is ok.

I buy and eat a lot of crap and I'm under no illusion that the contents is less than ideal, problem is they taste good, they're cheap and they're quick to prepare.

The only home cooked meal I have every week is a on a sunday. :D
