970 or 980 TI? Bottleneck?

Hi there

I have a I7 920 oc to 3.6 ghz (CO/C1) I been thinking if I should get a 970 or 980 Ti now but need to know if its worth it or just get a new computer entirely when skylake is out then next year upgrade to pascal cards.

I do plan to upgrade 920 however been looking at benchmarks between 4790k and other cpus and there is no big leap.

I am a gamer and do abit of 3dmax here and then and waiting for star citizen if it is released.

970 would be absolutely fine with your CPU and a would good match if you're at 1080p. A 980Ti could see slightly higher frames (notably minimums) with a more modern CPU at 4.4GHz depending on the game but nothing too major.

With Skylake coming so soon it would be a bit silly to get a 4790K now as you say. After all this time with the 920 it would make sense to see what gains Skylake has over Haswell.

Yeah well I am a patient person but I want something that can give extra life to run games that come out this year (star wars battlefront and others) and invest in a card that is not expensive but powerful upgrade over my MSI 680 Lightning.

You will be bottleknecked if you opt for the 980ti. I've had similar rigs and my 680sli was starved until I upgraded.
