My girlfriend and I are going to Greece for 2 weeks self-catering next month and really not sure how much to take each. I've always been spot on with our previous holidays, but this time around I really have no idea, though I was thinking maybe £500 each seeing as the £:€ rate is good at the moment.

Cheers.

Aye or a few high energy chocolate bar and few protein bars, just in case :P
No clue on what things cost now.

Why just in case, why not hand luggage too? :p

We're travelling with Thomas Cook so if any **** hits the fan then I'll get the rep to sort it out. We booked last minute so don't think we got ripped off, we definitely didn't (I'm a bit of a tight B with £, kinda need to be, so I know if I am or aren't getting ripped xD)

I wouldn't take anywhere near that much cash. Clarity credit card ftw (and Santander Zero cards, but you're not cool enough to have them, sorry :().
Yeah, because places in Greece are going to be happy for people to pay for everything on credit rather than cash at the moment (they've limited access to any money in the bank - places are starting to refuse payment with anything but cash).

Well it's the legal currency of the country so unless you plan on haggling with magic beans then I'm not sure what your advice is.

Fwoosh.

I've got a credit card which incurs 0% fees used abroad so could take that just in case, though with the financial situation out there could become useless anyway (I don't use the card anymore anyway).

In fact, I may need a balance transfer card soon - any recommendations and info on that front too, I don't particularly understand the balance transfer cards even though I've tried to understand them in the past (hence sticking to 0% on purchases cards).

Usually yes, but not in Greece currently. There are limitations on cash withdrawals and credit card acceptance.

The limits are on domestic accounts, not on international.

However, it might be tricky to find an ATM with enough money in it ;)

Definitely limits on acceptance of all cards though. There's not much point in retailers taking payments directly to their banks if they can't take that money back out.

It would take several months for Greece to shift out of the Euro and into a new currency. DeLaRue aren't firing up the printing presses just yet.

Take a suitcase full of gold bars. Greece will be in a state of anarchy and you will need gold to buy ammo and weapons to protect yourself................ either that or get some caps, they are useful currency in a post apocalyptic countries and don't forget your pipboy 3000..............................

Going at the end of August to visit my gf's family for a week

We're taking about £500 worth (together not each), not that we will likely need it but its just in case, although we're staying with them so cheap holiday for me :D
