BBQ: Gas Vs Charcoal

Have always used a weber with briquettes and I imagine I will always have one as it works brilliantly. However, I do fancy a gas bbq to complement it so when just doing a quick meal for the family or when I need extra capacity for a party, I have it.

I have a cheap and nasty gas bbq, but added lava rocks - never had any complaints from friends and family regarding it not tasting bbq'ed.

I use it all year round, and can't beat it for convenience and consistent cooking quality.

Ive got both. If its after 9pm weekdays when it comes to eat i use the gas

Any other time its the coal or smoker

That what I use currently, the build quality of the Webber is superb, left outside uncovered for years and not a spot of rust on it. Just a bit on the small side though.

I'm still waiting for the it's for real men argument as it's the closest you'll get to wearing a loincloth in the garden. :p
Given that I do pretty much do the loincloth thing, albeit more like OG Lightweights and an armful of wood out in the middle of nowhere, I respectfully disagree!! :D

Charcoal is the norm for me, although type is purely dependent on what is in stock, more than anything else. If I don't like what's to hand, I just go out to the woodstore in the garden and use some of what would normally go on the lounge fire. The Braai fans seem to prefer it, so I'm happy with that.

I BBQ all year over charcoal and the only grief I have is buying charcoal in December.
Gas just doesn't seem to keep you as warm, does it!
Try a local butcher or farm shop. Ours all seem to have a few sacks available, even on New Years Eve, as I found to my delight!

Gas, heats up almost instantly and way less cleaning and faffing around instantly.
My BBQ has a charcoal half and a gas half so i can do both, but in 2 years I have never once bothered with the charcoal side. If I only had charcoal BBQ then I would BBQ way less often, as it is I BBQ 3-5 days a week, 52 weeks a year. I can get some chicken thighs out and whack them straight on the BBQ.

Charcoal with a chimney strated has you fully up to temp in under 20 minutes.
If you use lump wood then you also have very little ash to deal with after.

With gas in under 20 minutes I have cooked the meat, eaten, finished cleaning and I'm out enjoying beers on the deck.

Gas has its place. It's very convenient for one. As mentioned above, you can switch it on and be cooking 10 minutes later. If you're only doing a few sausages for a sandwich, who's going to spend half an hour lighting charcoal to cook them. Stick them on a gas BBQ and they'll be tastier than from a frying pan but quicker than lighting charcoal.

I personally don't like the idea of a gas bbq, but would agree with this.

I have a proper kettle bbq, but rarely use it. When I do, it's an event or social thing and this suits me. A gas bbq means you can bbq whenever you feel like it and be cooking in no time. Each has it's place. Go with whichever fits your usage.

I've found a chimney lighter can get me cooking in a few minutes. I do let things get a bit inferno like before I toss the coals into the BBQ though, which is a bit dangerous.

Coal all day long, have used both and if I don't stand there with a beer in one hand, tears in my eyes and stinking of smoke it's just not right lol.
