Anything to watch out for with 325i automatic gearboxes, around 40k

ZF 6hp boxes are really solid.

Solenoids need replacing at some point, especially when the fluid hasn't been changed at all. Usually on high mileage ones or cars that tow.

It's around £350 for that job if it ever needs doing which from 40k to 100k I doubt it would.

The boxes will be fine with that mileage - your main issue with that car will be the temperamental N53 stratified direct injection engine it has. The earlier 2.5 litre version is more reliable.

Thanks guys, given me some confidence there ta! Turns out the car is 07, must have misread! So may hold off for something newer! Mileage was attractive though

Is there really much difference between 07 and 08? It's not as if you were looking at an 11 and an 07 popped up is it.

An 08 is barley any newer than an 07, not enough to be categorised as 'too old' under criteria that allows an 08.

Noo sorry i was under the impression 08 onwards got a facelift etc? May be wrong then swear i heard that somewhere!

Facelift was September 2008 onwards I believe so it's quite possible that the 08 you were looking at was still pre-LCI.

Guess i want an 09 then, not sure but may aswell get one if i can. I wouldnt know the difference until i saw them side by side i bet. If theres nothing else different from 07 other than the facelift then i suppose 07 would be fine, just when i sat and thought about it, thats quite old but i see what you were saying about 08 only being a year fresher, been looking for ages so may just go for it. Will have a look at it either way and see how i feel when i see it

I can't see there being many/any well specced facelift cars for the budget tbh. The later cars look a lot fresher (coupe excluded as it's not vastly different) but imo offer poor value at the moment

So maybe for my budget i shouldn't aim for a newer one, go for one like this which for its age has really good mileage imo! Think its about 38k to be more precise, black, leather interior etc msport

I don't really see the benefit in aiming for an arbitrary mileage either.

If you intend to put the BMW warranty on the car then it makes sense to aim for just under 60k, but otherwise just go on condition.

Ain't that the truth!

Last week my mums car (09 LCI 325i) started misfiring badly but only temporarily. She had it towed to the dealer and it needed 6 new injections and 6 new spark plugs. Injectors are £210 each. Spark plugs are £70 for the set. Labour and diagnostic fees would have been about £400. Total bill will have been around £1600 with the parts making up around £1200 of that.

She paid £100 excess for her warranty.
