I wanted to ask the community for some help in finding a good gaming laptop in the price range of £1,200 to £1,500 (please note, it must be a laptop as due to space I simply have no room for a desktop).
There are currently three laptops I'm considering:

The first is an Xplorer Xtreme X5 G-Sync, found here ** Competitor link removed **. It has an i5-4690k, a GTX970M 6GB card, 8GB DDR3 and a 15.6" 3840x2160 display. It comes in at £1,419.

The second is an MSI GT72 ( found here ** Competitor link removed **), with an i7 4720HQ, a GTX980M 4GB card, 8GB DDR and a 17.3" 1920 x 1080 display. It is £1,379.

The third and final one is an XMG U705 ( found here ** Competitor link removed **). It has an i7-4790k, a GTX970M 6GB card (with G-Sync), 8GB DDR3 and a 17.3" 1920x1080 display. It is £1,468.

Now, I'm still torn between 15 and 17", but I'm fairly flexible either way. I'd *like* the system to be good for gaming, but I wouldn't use a separate monitor so the graphics card will be running on whatever display the laptop has.

So, a few questions:

1. Which laptop above appears to be the best?
2, Can anyone recommend any other laptops in this price range (preferably with links to where it can be purchased, rather than just naming a brand, e.g. Alienware, Gigabyte). ** Links cannot be provided unless it's to OcUK **
3. The final system, the XMG, offers far more customisation options than the others. But I don't know this brand of laptop. Does anyone know how reputable they are?

Many thanks for any help.

Hi ajhmartin,

A very strong deal with OcUK at the moment is this award winning AORUS X7, discounted by £100 and also shipping with £160+ worth of added value with the rucksack and mouse..

Worth considering and you will find plenty of reviews out there.

Hope that helps,

Less than 10% performance difference between cruddy laptop graphics and desktop equivalent ;)
Maybe, but all I know is that it allows you to upgrade your GFX card over time without having to worry about having to buy a whole new laptop. ;)

I love the fact that my 6 year old Dell M6500 lappie can still handle power hungry games when it uses my eGPU.

Not bad for an old laptop. And would be even better if it wasn't for nVidia disabling physx on the card thanks to the AMD iGPU.

You can upgrade your GFX laptop over time also.

Our range of GT72 Dominator / Dominator Pro has MXM Graphics module rather than hard wired to the board. Therefore you can upgrade gaming notebook graphics.

When you look at comparing 4xx Series desktop to 4xxM on notebooks some years ago the performance difference was around 60%.

Comparing 9xx desktop to 9xxM mobile (like for like) it's less than 10%. If Nvidia launch anything new in the future, then at the most you would expect 10% difference based on trends.

Therefore you can buy a decent Gaming Notebook now, be happy with the core spec on CPU/Mem/HDD and also be confident you can upgrade GPU if Nvidia launch something new.

I doesn't make much sense to upgrade a GPU imo... best to buy the fastest you can afford and then upgrade in 3 years as CPU's will have moved on considerably by then and the GPU's may use different slots.
