Hi all.

Please, please help. Im reading myself in circles here.

I currently own a machine with a i7 920 chip running at 4Ghz and a AMD 7950.

I waited for the fury cards to surface but Im underwhelmed by them.

I did think a 980ti was the way to go, but, i have a BenQ 24" 1080p monitor so dont really need any 1440 or 4k resolutions, yet.

I do want a new graphics card, im noticing my 7950 starting to struggle with certain games. At the moment I mainly play BF4. But will be intrested in fallout 4 and other games going forward.

My question is, which card would you people suggest? Is a 980ti overkill would a 980 g1 or msi 980 do me, or is another card better?

I know its a bit of a vague open question, but, im driving myself mad here. Im interested in seeing a notable jump in graphics and fps, too (justify the spend haha)

Thanks

If you're buying second hand, the 980s are a good bit cheaper so if you don't feel like a Ti is worth it the saving is more significant.

Having said that, the Ti has a pretty decent performance jump over the regular 980; more so than you would usually expect at the top end.

Is your monitor 120/144Hz? If yes, I'd say go for the Ti. If no, and you're not planning on changing monitor for a good while, go for the regular 980.

If your main game is BF4, as a heads up, I get around 20 fps less than DX11 on my Fury X when running Mantle and I believe there is no Mantle optimisations coming either :(

A 290X would be where I look or a 980.

Overkill is used far to much in this part of the forum. Wait two months and the newest game then it probably won't be overkill.

I'd go 980/290x/390x, you can pick them up pretty cheap at the moment.

Or go 980Ti/Fury and it'll give you an excuse to upgrade.

I'm running a single Asus GTX 980 STRIX OC that I overclocked additionally right out of the box to 1178@1330MHz base clock, 1753@1950MHz Vram and it eats any AAA title I throw at it on my AOC 23'6 TFT 1920x1080 60Hz.
Before that I used to have 2x GTX 970 SLi but sold one to finance another card to my other PC, and then I ran with a single GTX 970 for about a month. But then a good deal on a used 2nd hand GTX 980 came by and I bought that an sold the GTX 970 :)

But I admit it still tickles in my fingers to run GTX 980 SLi :D

Hi, I too have been completely underwhelmed by the Fury cards and , for other reasons, will not buy Nvidia, so that basically has left me thinking I will make do with my 290 until something sufficiently powerful for my 4K needs comes along. I have saved enough money for one card but I find I just cannot see the value in the furys or the 980Ti and don't think they give enough of a performance boost for the £450-£600+. I know you say you only need 1080p but you could make use of VSR. Personally I don't think any of the 'new' Amd cards are good value and of course Nvidia.....well.......:D

My monitor is the BenQ XL2420T, i use the lightboost mod on it to make it 120hz

No the monitor is 120hz even without the light boost mod enabling the light boost mod makes the backlight strobe faster making things look less blury:p

Anyway its a shame you don't have access to the MM there are some good deals to be had there.

If you have the money then I'd go 980 Ti.

Big boost over what you have, plus a bit extra performance again once you upgrade your system to Skylake (depending on how much your 920 bottlenecks it)

And if you did find the 980 Ti 'overkill' for 1080p in some games, you can always turn on DSR for extra eye candy.

Im a long way off the MM im afraid :(

I'm using a 290x at 1080p and I wish I had more grunt. It's just not enough for a lot of games and that's before I go to 1440p with vsr. I was waiting for the Fury X and may still get it but if not it'll be the Ti. Even they will struggle to give consistent 60 fps minimums at 1080p occasionally so no it's not overkill if you like the eye candy on.

Why does everyone keep recommending the 390x over the base 390? There almost £100 difference between them yet negligible difference in fps, maybe 5%.

The 390x is not in my opinion good value. The 390 however is fantastic value. I'd either go for that or a FuryX/980ti.

If you can afford it, get the Ti. If you are looking to save a little, get the 390/390x or the 980, possibly even the 970.
