Dog uncomfortable/crying after visiting vets

So long story short, I have a 5 year old king charles spaniel/shih tzu who groomers won't touch. He's not nasty, but does get bitey when he feels nervous or threatened. (Sharp objects like grooming tools around his face!)

We took him to the vet who had to sedate him to do it, who then shaved him today. He's home now, but he'll take a few steps then sit down, as if there's a pain near his bum/testicles!? He's also sat on my bed crying, but he is eating fine.

Could this just be they shaved him and he's sore, I'm probably being paranoid, but I'm worried the sedative is having a side effect. His testicles do look quite big, but that might just be that he's been shaved and my perception is off.

(I've already considered pooing through mine and/or vets letterbox before any suggestions are made :p - the vets is also now closed so can't call today)

Just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences?

Has he been shaved before? He might not be used to having his testicles swinging in the breeze and it's a new (and delightful in my experience) sensation.

Once, for a laugh, I let Mrs Cheesyboy wax my testicles. Took a layer of skin of the poor chaps. Stung a bit.

Hope that helps

@arknor, he gets a bit nervous if I touch around that area. I did convince him to let me pick him up and I can see on his testicles there are very slight red grazes, probably where they nipped him at the vets. I guess it's sore for him, but at least I know what's up.

I'll wet a towel with some cold water for him to sit his bum on, maybe that'll take away some of the pain.

keep an eye on him he might lick his balls a lot and that's the reason they are sore.

if so he may require one of those stupid cones on his head until his balls heal.

BTW I was joking and just wanted you to say you touched your dogs balls, the above could be true though

is he insured? and if so, does your insurance include free calls to vetfone? might be worth a call to speak to a vet' nurse for an opinion and to better be able to describe what's happened / happening. even if it's not included I think you can call them for a fixed fee, or per minute billing.

Other than that I'd try and work on his fear of people / things coming near him!

Do you have any post-shave soothing cream? Rub it liberally on his nethers.

Considering that is most dogs favourite place to have a thorough lick, putting post-shave soothing cream there for him to lick may not be the best idea. I don't know what the cream will be made of, but I doubt it would do a dog's tummy any good at all. However, if you can find a soothing cream that's safe for dogs then go for it

Thanks for the suggestions! @Edrof, soothing cream sounds like a good idea, would my local supermarket have it that I could go and get now? Or is there any human equivalent I could use on him perhaps

@Reaper, yeah it's a good point, I'll have to use google-fu

I know a lot about testicles, but not much about dogs.

Well Bromhead you seem to have considered the one contribution i was going to make so i hope your dog gets better soon.
