980ti dilemma

I'm really struggling to find a monitor to go with my new gaming rig

I was set on a 980ti to make it future proof.

I cant find a 1440p monitor to suit (Wont go near ROG swifts because of the poor QC)

So now im thinking 1080p but then is a 980ti wasted at 1080 and am I really missing out on 1440p?

Help :(

I wouldn't recommend trying to "future proof" It doesn't really work... you spend more to get unused performance and by the time you need the performance stuff is out that's faster and cheaper.

1080p 120/144 Hz or a 980Ti is most certainly wasted.

For 1080p I would recommend an R9 390, or if you want a bit more power, a 980, although that's not really needed imo.

Take off a couple of FPS as I was talking about a 390, not a 390X.
Witcher 3 is on high, not highest, so you may want a 980 for the extra performance, up to you, the extra £130 over the 390 doesn't seem worth it to me but that's just my opinion.

Obviously if you go 1080p 120/144Hz, then a 980Ti is good.

A 980ti isn't wasted at 1080p. There are games that still dip below 60 with a 980ti at 1080p, so in that regard it's clearly not overkill. 1440p is definitely the sweet spot though in general. I haven't upgraded my monitor in ages but when I do it will absolutely be G-Sync, no doubt about it. People have said G-Sync is more of an upgrade than you'd ever get with a new GPU. Being able to game at 45fps with perfect frame pacing sounds amazing.

I have a ROG Swift following a friend's recommendation. I was worried about potential issues but 1 month in and all seems fine (touch wood!).

Prior to that was using a 980 @ 1080p and it wasn't wasted.

Just buy it, if there is any problem in the first 14 days OCUK will refund you immediately.
You can't let pessimism dictate your life :P

get the ROG ;). Its Acer where the quality sucks. To be honest the swift is as good as my old asus PB287q in terms of build quality, rock solid. No problems whatever.

1080p-1440p is far bigger of a jump than 1440-4k. But 144hz for me is just perfect butter smooth. 60-144hz is a similar feeling to 1080p-1440p-4k.

+g-sync is nice but even say at 40fps it's still 40fps so you still notice the frame drops. G-sync is better noticed on higher refresh rates.

Yup, I've had both and the Acer is cheap feeling, like one of those sub £100 monitors but with the new tech shoved into it with no thought. Mine was full of issues, dead pixels, backlight bleed and it went back the same day.

The Asus on the other hand while not perfect is great a well thought out and properly designed product from a decent company. Great performance and image quality with one of the best TN panels ever made, super fast UI, thin bezal, subtle LEDs. It is really a focused product and you can see exactly who it is aimed at. Once you get yourself a decent example you'll be laughing. whyscotty has one up on the MM now for a decent price!

Going 4K now is nice, but I still think we've got 12 months plus to go before it starts to become a "sensible" decision.

I don't think you lot are getting it. He is not buying the ROG for the reason he mentions and I also reckon it is as a stand against the stupid prices for real poor customer care.

980ti is defo not wasted. I notice lots of drops on a 970 and I only play at 1080@60fps.

I understand and appreciate his concerns about the ROG, but ultimately missing out on a decent product because you might have problems and then you might have problems getting those possible problems resolved....

It boggles the mind the amount of people who don't buy X product because someone on the internet said it was rubbish or had problems, or had problems getting those possible problems resolved. First hand experience is always the best way on deciding if a product is worthy of your cash.

I won't argue Asus customer service is great because it isn't and if he was talking about an Asus GPU or motherboard where a retailer is involved and there is often a 30+ day turn around I would agree. However with Asus monitors there is an good on site exchange process. It isn't perfect, it isn't up to Dells standards, but if someone is home during normal delivery hours you shouldn't have any problems getting it swapped out. There is no need return it to the retailer to get another panel delivered and your old one collected.

At 1080p @ 144Hz I might agree with your point with some titles, but at 1080p @ 60Hz a £500+ graphics card isn't a good value purchase. You are not going to "save" money or future proof a system, you are going to waste money and not see the benifit. By the time we see more demanding titles the card will be worth and be available to purchase for half what it is now.

The only titles you are going to see drops in are the ones where there are serious optimisation problems or they are extremely demanding. Batman Arkham Knight and Day-Z Standalone spring to mind for the former and Crysis and Metro 2033 for the latter. However for most of the games people play you are not going to see the benefit unless you increase the pixel count or a have a visable FPS increase via a high Hz screen.
