I'm crumbling...

Dude,if its FO4,seriously just hold onto your money - heck a single GTX970 or R9 390 would probably be enough for it if you really want to upgrade.

Heck, even probably a single Titan Black.

I am going to play it soon to launch if I can,and Iwill be rocking far less graphics horsepower than you as I cannot push myself to spend much more than £200ish on a card myself.

He's already on titan black. cant see a 970 being much of a upgrade tbh

I think with Nvidia actively targetting Maxwell now,its more the case Kepler is starting to fall behind(an example being W3),but TBH I have a feeling FO4 might be more CPU and RAM intensive. The world is meant to be bigger than in Skyrim!!

Two of those G1 gaming 980Tis seems to be the one to get if you want ultimate power, should work on an 800w power supply

I am going with Fury X though because of the marketshare situation, regardless of whether nvidia did nerf the 700 series or not, havent seen the evidence yet,
maybe witcher 3 is just badly programmed and its not nvidias fault.

The G1 was the first custom card out so it picked up a reputation as being good, however all of the custom board cards are just as good, but the G1 has 75mm fans and most of the others have 90-100mm fans meaning they are far less noisy. The G1 isn't even in the same ball park as the HOF.

One 980ti isnt enough for ultra 4k in my experience. My 980ti sli can do 50-60 fps in witcher 3 ultra everything + hair works.

Also another thing ive found is my powersupply fan has been running flat out during gaming since i upgraded from 7970 xfire never heard it before and they were heavily overclocked so i can only assume the ti's are pulling a lot more power (seasonic x series 1050w gold)

I'm desperately trying to avoid open coolers for SLI. However, should I decide that I will give it a try I will likely buy two Fury cards as I see them as much better value, and if I gotta put up with stupid temps I may as well save a few quid.

In fact after seeing the actual power figures for Fury I am very impressed. They use a good chunk less than Titan Blacks (well, 780tis in that chart) but I will wait a bit longer to see if any one comes up with a blower cooler.

I'm sure once the cores start flowing in some one will do it. So for right now I may skip for another month and build myself a petrol powered RC Zonda lol.

You not on 4k gsync Andy? If so 980Ti all day long, combined with gsync you can comfortably aim for 40-45 frame averages and not 60.

The issue I have is this dude. I already own two Titan Blacks. They are between 5 and 10% slower than the 980, stock - overclocked. So that means that the two of them are faster than the 980ti. That means I would need two, that demands a bag of sand.

And I thought about it last night, sensibly of course. Basically right now I'm not gaming a great deal. Well no, that's not strictly true. I am, but I am playing Borderlands with my lovely wife. And when we're finished doing that we will be playing Borderlands 2. And then, maybe we will give that awful "The pre sequel" another go.

And it runs beautifully at 4k. Then I have a mate just upgrading his rig to play GTAV, and GTAV runs like a dream at 4k. 40-58 FPS smooth as butter with G-sync.

Oh yeah, I went for a spin on PCars yesterday, that also runs amazingly.

So I'm literally out one game I would like to play (Wolfy the old blood or whatever it's called) and I really can't justify a grand just for that, considering it's some sort of DLC (even though it's standalone).

I think what I need to do is think sensibly and give this gen a skip. Maybe then I can get one card that's good enough for 4k ultra without needing two or without compromise.

Edit.

Now I don't know if there is any truth to this but hey, it's happened so it's not slander.

I used to score at least 2000 points higher in 3dmark. Seriously, of late my scores have been utterly pants. When I first got my TBs I first flashed on the EVGA SOC bios (they're Palit reference) and then I overclocked them to about 1200 mhz, IIRC. But of late? I can't even get 50 mhz out of them.

Now I don't know if that's deliberate or what, but it sucks. In benchmarks the Titan X and 980ti walk all over my scores but in games? I'm getting much higher FPS counts than the 980ti does in reviews.

It could be deliberate. Why won't my cards overclock any more? why are my scores so low? maybe because the first thing you do when you buy a new card is benchmark it. Maybe the drivers have been broken or derped?

A high stock boosting Ti should be beating a pair of blacks (that sounded, erm wrong lol!) In most if not all situations.

Something like the amp extreme? Some of those doing 1420 stock boost...

In benchmarks.

As I said though dude, when I look at reviews (Bit-tech for example) in Crysis 3 I am destroying one 980ti, as I should be.

It's only things like 3dmark and Valley I'm losing in, and that could be a deliberate derp.

I can only base it on my own assumptions having jumped from 780 SLI to a single 980Ti.

Do you want me to do a little testing via DSR (0% smoothing) 4K and see what results I get?

I'm trying to think of a game.. Do you have Metro 2033 per chance?

780s are a chunk slower than mine, plus have less VRAM. I'm currently in talks about a Fury X tbh. I'd be happy with that :)

Give it a few more weeks see if the Fury X sorts itself out. Still looks a good buy. Looks like 2 cards is still required for all the bells and whistles for 4k though.

So Andy what you are basically saying is that the current upgrade path for you isn't worth the money as it is not a big enough improvement in performance.

Basically too little for too much.

Much like a $300 750ti would be.;)

I would need to spend a grand. Over the whole thing I would need two.. One would be nice, as it would eradicate the need for driver support (well, multi support) but I would gain nearly nothing.

Well I'm currently in talks with some one who may sell me his Fury X. That was what I wanted...

PGI. Here, I just ran Metro and was surprised by the performance. Same min FPS as usual but average and max were excellent.
