I hate the DVLA

They are pretty incompetent :( they incorrectly added catagories onto my license I didn't actually have a license for (D1E, etc.) then when it came to renewing the photo part that caused all kinds of problems as they refused to renew it with those catagories and apparently "couldn't" remove them from the license and wanted me to take the relevant tests and so on - of which atleast one of them I couldn't actually take anyhow as I didn't meet the other requirements.

O great, I sent my licence of for change of address and got it back with a load of extra categories. Have to renew it next year so thats going to b fun :/

You can still complain - complaints turn up on the KPIs and really annoy the crap out of them because even the DVLA have some bureaucratic committee watching them too.

A neighbour of mine, who takes no care of his house (looks derelict) has no tax.
His old car I reported as it had no rear window for 18 months, no Tax, no MOT, flat tyre. No idea whether it was insured or not.
The car disappeared (hopefully crushed) and his new one has no tax either.

It is sad what the DVLA focus on at times.

There IS recourse... it happened to me twice!

I didn't even send the slip recorded delivery.

All I did was call them & tell them that I had posted it to them, the date when I had posted it... they said OK, put it on the system and I never heard anything more...

I've paid it now. The guy on the phone said that if I refuse to pay, they would take me to court and that I would have to provide proof of postage or I would lose and be faced with court costs too.
Funny, I thought in this country the onus was on the authorities to prove wrongdoing, not on the individual to prove innocence.

They lie to get you to pay to meet their collection quotas or they get arse ache from their management.

You spoke to the wrong person ;)

I've had two written off easily... with no proof of delivery.

Does that apply in civil cases?

My missus part-exd her old car at a traders and received a fine months later claiming she hadn't sent off the relevant paperwork. She paid the fine only to have a letter a month later saying she would be getting a refund as it was their fault. So they aren't bad all the time

just bumping this thread to save making a new one. I have just had a guy come look at my car for sale then said he needs to go away and think about it. So thought i would check out the DVLA site about what happens with tax now given that it needs cancelling when someone purchases it.
clicked through the pages and on the options of selling car privately it says its closed on sunday  and can only be done during office hours monday-saturday  so what would i have done if this guy would have wanted to buy my car before?

The new buyer uses the 11 digits from his slip of the V5 to tax the vehicle himself. You automatically get refunded any tax on the vehicle when you tell the DVLA that you sold it.

Yes but on the Dvla site it's got an option were it looks like the seller has to cancel it to claim they have sold it privately with the 11 digit number and then the buyer taxs it with the same 11 digit v5 number. When I clicked through it the site claims it cannot be done on Sunday as office and site are closed

Good luck - I "think" they've now sorted whatever the problem with the system was as mine have been fixed sometime since.

Oh, I see now.

Well the buyer taxes it and you complete that online form on the Monday?

But if i don't cancel the tax before he buys I'm sure It would cause a problem if he goes and gets flashed by a speed camera etc driving home?
Yeh it's really confusing. How many people would spend Sunday's to look for cars with most people being off and the site can't be used as that and the phone line are closed  so we can't sell or buy on a Sunday anymore privately? It's all a con so they can hit people with big fine's and clamp there cars etc.

What does tax have to do with speeding cameras?

Literally nothing has changed with regards to selling and buying cars on a Sunday...

It has because if selling privately i cannot use the website or phone line as its closed on sunday and cannot let someone drive off in a car still taxed in my name due to the new rules.
i have read a lot on other forums etc about people being caught out since the change etc selling privately just sending the v5 off which takes days by post and the new buyer getting done speeding etc or parking tickets and the fines getting sent to the old owners address due to the DVLA thinking u still own the car hence the reason i would need to fill the sold form out online which for some reason cannot be done on a Sunday
