Futuristic computer

Loading times have got progressively worse with computers until recently with ssd's going mainstream.

The old computers that solved math problems didn't have loading.

My Macbook wakes from sleep before I've got the lid fully open. Can't even remember the last time I rebooted it. Don't really think it needs to be any faster.

The Commodore 64 booted up instantly. The ZX Spectrum was pretty much instant as well.

So, yes, you would have seen one in the early 80s.

Who actually turn off their tablet?

It's like my phone, it might need a reboot now and again but it's never truly off.

Exactly. Reboot for OS updates otherwise asleep...

My wife's MacBook and my iMac awake instantly. Welcome to the future OP. Even my Windows 8.1 PC wakes in < second. The only difference is Windows tends to wake from sleep a little more than OS X and then not go back to sleep.

No, it just seems strange that almost every electronic item I have works immediately. Kettle, Vacuum Cleaner, Radio...... Well the TV does take a little while to warm up and wondered if scientists were sticking to old technology and just trying to improve on it rather than having a fresh look and coming up with something which worked at the flick of a switch?

10 seconds to boot up - all those ten seconds add up you know!:D

I take it you haven't considered the scales of magnitude of the difference in complexity between flicking a switch to complete a circuit to a heating element/electric motor, and pushing a button to complete billions of circuits in a particular order? :p

Got a genuine lol from me <thumbs up>

If you power off a tablet then in most cases it will take longer to boot up than a modern PC with an SSD.

If you simply press the power button once so it goes to deep sleep mode then that's not really the "boot up" the Op is referring to.

Any modern Windows PC/Laptop with an SSD can turn on nearly instantly if put in a similar deep sleep mode by using the equivalent button too. The BIOS will know it's in sleep mode and won't do the long-winded hardware checking stuff at power up.

In the grand scheme of things, there really is no reason to fully shut down a modern computer in general every day usage, just use the advanced deep sleep modes, it's why they exist.

Yeah, the BBC was a low beep then high beep, then ready :-) Still got a working Beeb from 1981, so 34 years old. Why don't PCs last that long?!
