Afternoon all,

I need some help in choosing a new GPU. I currently have a AMD Radeon 7970 and with the release of Witcher 3 its starting to heavily show its age.

For awhile I was looking at getting a reference 980TI as they look bad ass and only cost $500 vs the third party Coolers at £550 with abit high clock speeds.
However I play have a 1080P 27inch 144hz monitor not a 1440P or 4k
Because of this would it be better to get a 980 with a awesome cooler and higher clock speeds and still save myself £50-100 ?

Because of my Monitor my games MUST Run at 144hz or Higher so I can get the most out of my screen.

Any ideas ?

TL;DR Should I get a 980 OC with Third Party cooler or a reference 980TI for 1080P gaming at 144hz.

I have a 980 with an overclock, it is capable of 120+ Fps 1080p for most games, but for the extra £50-100 you have spare, I would buy the 980ti.

I bought my 980 second hand for a decent deal (£270), if it wasn't so cheap, OCUK's deal was too good to miss.

You should get this zotac amp! 980ti. and here is a nice review.

980 and 980ti have similar price/performance ratio, you have to decide if 25% of perormance is worth 100£.
The 980g1 is on offer at 389£, so you wouldn't be wrong with either choice, but honestly if you're making the jump, you might as well go all the way.

980Ti although.. I can't sit at a solid 144fps with games maxed at 1080p.

Dirt rally maxed, sits around the 135fps and drops to 110 in some parts. Still, can't complain :D

A 980 will not sit at 144fps@1080p. You need a 980Ti for that, or you need to dial down the eye candy with a 980.

I'm not entirely sure a 980Ti will give you those frames at that res, actually. Your best bet is to get some fps details from someone with a 980 and 980Ti and the games you're gonna play.

^ this, at £509 the zotac Amp is a great choice if you want a reference PCB with a better cooler
It should easily do 1400+ with an easy OC so will be a good chunk faster than a 980

Red and black theme is begging for the MSI Gaming 6G 980Ti, probably pushing your spend up a bit but it'll out perform the reference stuff, its red and black, its very quiet and if you're going to £500 then an extra £50 is a drop in the pond.

I think what you mean ! we have just got one at work but its a GTX960 without the backplate. I saw it and I thought. I need this in my system, If I was going to get a 980 it would be an MSI one as they are only £415

They can be noisy, but are the best choice if you plan to SLI on air. They are not the best performers of the lineup.

I have a red and black them so this GPU does somewhat fit it, but as a asked "Are the reference 980TI any good ?"

I think string is talking about the reference cooler, the zotac amp is a reference board but its a good aftermarket cooler, it should do north of 1400 easy and possibly 1450-1500... Something like the gaming 6 will be a little bit cooler, a little bit quieter and should do over 1500, but if your budget is £500 and not £560 then it is an excellent choice and will be a very good chunk faster than a 980... Well worth the extra if you have it to spend imo

Even a 980ti or titanx or FURYX will not keep 120+ fps on most modern high end games it's just not possible without downgrading the graphic settings...
1080p is a walk in the park for most GPUs but 120 or 144hz isn't. These refresh rates need SLI or crossfire if you want ultra settings in the games you play...

Keep in mind all what I just said depends on the games. But witcher 3 you have no chance on ultra.

Note where I said you will after lower settings down... Tweaking is that a fancy way saying lower some settings down?

Because Gta5 on ultra 144fps you got no chance..

You be staying away from quite a few settings to get them frame rates.

Check the links, 115fps minimums gtav max settings at 1080p, and that's at 1420 boost, the amp should do 1450-1500

When I say small tweaks I mean like just not using the default AA (often 4xmsaa) and using smaa or something that is very hard to see the difference (particularly at a higher res like 1440) but gets you a few extra frames back up on the minimums, but not going from ultra to high or anything that drastic

I will tell you right now, using both a Titan X and a 980Ti, there is zero chance of getting 115fps minimums maxed on GTA V, regardless of what any link claims.

No chance whatsoever.

Am sure he still have something to say you wrong.

They probably just done a little drive down the road for there benchmarks.. I know a lot used the first mission you take the cars because it plays out the same each time. But a lot people forget that the city isn't the demanding part of the game, it also depends on time of day also.
