Looking for ideas for a graphics card for wee bros machine. It has an fx8350 and 8gb ram so is a decent rig. Graphics card is next on the list to upgrade and budget is under £300.

Looked at the offeringsame from AMD and Nvidia just wanted to get an expert opinion here :)

what powersupply do you have and if you only game on 1080p a r9 390 // gtx 970 should be more then enough

R9 390

8gb ram
is faster
uses more power

gtx 970

3,5gb issue thing dont know if it will be a problem anytime soon
uses less power
overclocks very good

but 1200 r9 390 is still faster then an 1450 gtx 970

so your choice

650w corsair power supply, playing on a 144hz 1080p asus monitor. They were the 2 cards we were looking at but just wanted to see if there was one better to choose than the other. I'm a bit of an AMD fan in more bang for your buck(all be it not as an efficient bang lol) but I know graphics cards are a different league from processors.

I'd say the choice is either R9 390 or GTX 970 as well. At stock speeds they are neck and neck in performance but the GTX 970 is better at overclocking. In terms of bang for buck, I'd argue that the 970 is better right now.

It does seem to have the edge and runs cooler/less power which would suit the build. Is 8gb of memory ever going to be useful on the 390 at that level of power I wonder if it can make use of it.

Not powerful enough to make full use of it, unless your plan is running 3 cards plus.

Well the 390 has a 512 bit memory bus and more bandwidth compared to the 970, so it can just about make use of the extra 4GB VRAM. You probably won't be needing it though unless you do some serious rendering or game at 4K resolution.

Okay the budgets for a single card so thinking 970 is the way to go. And to simplify things will the 970 run most games at max settings on 1080

Is this the G1 edition or what is the difference?

PSU is CX600, not 650w as previously mentioned

G1 edition uses a custom PCB with better power delivery aswell as a backplate.

In theory it will OC better due to the better power delivery, although pretty much any 970 will clock 'well' reference or custom PCB.
