After 4 years of refusing to go to a theme park with the gf, I've finally caved in and agreed to a few days up at Alton towers this year. All be it probably the worst time after the whole smiler fracas but oh well. Anyway wanna know who's been and were did you stay? B n' B or at the resort? If a BnB which one?

Also best way to book tickets for the park? Is using the cereal box vouchers the cheapest way for 2 days or not?

I got a ticket for £15 from Tesco Clubcard vouchers. There are also plenty of 2 for 1 vouchers floating around. Went about a month ago and was all fine, I wouldn't let the Smiler accident put you off.

The resort is way too overpriced, stay local, there's a few small BnB's in Alton a few minutes from the park, I'll try and find the name of the place we stayed in.

You can bet your bottom dollar that every single nut and bolt has been checked after the Smiler incident. Now is probably the safest time to go.

I went to Thorpe Park on fathers day (I don't habe a father or kids) and it was awesome. The longest queue was about 10 mins, we went on several rides multiole times too. Saw: The Ride was shut due to a safety concern raised after the inspections following the Smiler crash which was a bummer but still a great day nonetheless.

Also, tickets online are half the price of gate tickets, which is the price taken in to account on all those 2-4-1 vouchers so they're pretty pointless anyway. MSE has a whole section dedicated to Merlin Attraction tickets, simply search "mse merlin tickets" and you'll find it.

Have fun!

The only reason I wouldn't go on the Smiler is the fact I would produce copious amounts of vomit. I have no doubt in my mind that it's probably the safest time ever to go to a theme park, I'm not sure Merlin could afford more bad press!

I love Alton Towers, it's just a nice place to go in the grounds too when you want to stay upright for a while between rides. Must go back soon.

A few days at Alton towers?

I got bored after about 5-6 hours of walking around. Me n the mrs got a 2for1 voucher on some receipt and randomly decided to just go there straight away. Only 2 of the rides i thought was very good was the smiler and number 13 ( we had no clue what the ride was about so it took us both by surprise). The rest was a bit Meh and like any other roller coaster. Luckily we walked straight onto every ride we no ques at all, the park was dead (this was way before the smiler accident aswell).

No way i could spend a few days there,it would bore the **** out of me.

You thought Nemesis was 'meh'? Do you have no soul?!

So go BnB and book tickets online? Yeah I presumed that it would probably be the safest time to go probably shorter queues from people too put off to go.

You think 2 days would be too long. Was thinking of booking 3 nights at the BnB and doing something else on the third day. If there is anything else to do in Staffordshire.

1 day is enough, don't bother going back a second day. If you want you can buy the return ticket for £15 iirc, it lets you go back *any* day which you can use later in the year. Much better than staying over, unless you live a zillion miles away I guess.

To maximise your visit, go during the week when the weather is meh but not raining and not during school holidays and you'll not queue up for more than 10 mins.

I live all the way over in Essex so it won't be a day trip no matter what. Can't stand long drives as it is. (I have a crappy little Ford Fiesta v reg, not pleasant to drive) yeah I'm looking at going the second week in September so no school holidays. Hope the weather will be nice.

Go to Thorpe Park then, much closer and just as good, in fact the thrill rides are even better as the footprint of the park is smaller than Alton Towers.
