might get a 390..

There is a 290X TRI-X OC on the Members Market which has one of the highest regarded coolers of the 290X series (It's the best I believe) going for £150 delivered bought Last August with a years warranty left.

I know what I would do :D

I wish I had access to the MM-been a member for years but it will take me forever to get 1000 posts

It is a great card to choose but no it is not faster than a 290x. All the reviews where made with the 300 series using the driver optimisations that at that time were held back from the 200 series for the purpose of allowing the 300 series to look better than it is in comparison to the cards they replaced.

Don't get me wrong they are better than the cards they replaced because they've managed to improve temps and improve how far they can be clocked but now they have released the same driver optimizations for the 200 series the difference is a lot less than in all the release reviews we got, But that was the reason why they held the optimisations back so that all the reviews would show more of an improvement than there really is and clearly it worked.

With matching clocks a 290x is not far off a 390x, The 390x is likely to overclock better though and it should also run cooler. The same will be true with the 290 and 390.

It would be nice to see some proper reviews done where they do use the good drivers for both but AMD won't want that as that was the point of it all.

Personally I think the 390 and 390x are great improvements on there Hawaii counterparts and I would rather have a 390 over a 290 or a 290x in all honesty.

dont be put off by a tri x, they are great for temps and noise infact i would say better than the msi imo

They're a lot better than the MSI gaming models on the 200 series, By the looks of things MSI have beefed them up for the 300 and hopefully fixed the temp issues people like me have with the Twin Frozer 290 and 290x gaming editions.

Sapphire did the best coolers for the 200 series Hawaii chips and if I was going to buy a 200 series Hawaii card it would only be from them. My current MSI TF 290x Gaming is a horrible card for temps (I tamed it eventually with new paste and an aggressive fan profile) and it seems the Asus DCUII used on the 200 series Hawaii chips was as well.

Yup, After owning a MSI 970 I was impressed with how quiet and cool it was therefore due to the 3.5VRAM issue I switched to a MSI 290X whilst also saving £££ The 290X with the Twin Frorz isn't amazing but still does the job pretty quietly, clearly MSI have beefed up the cooler on it's 3** series.

Why not just buy your girlfriend a card and take back the 7950?. It's sounding like you're swaying that way with your comments regarding the graphics score.

Both a decent upgrade to a 2900XT but I recommend the AMD 370 for the £12 difference.

Or could get a second hand 7950 for 80 quid :p I dno, I want to go single gpu with same performance I had before or even more power than my two 7950s. But I can't see it worth while paying so much money for a top spec card for a tiny bit more performance than two second hand 7950s.

I've actually been looking around for another 7950 second hand I think that's why way to go until something game changing comes along with 16nm or so at the moment.

But meh it's the wanting a upgrade and new toys situation :p been stuck with 7950s for so long I'm so bored of them but for the price they are amazing

Having sold my previous temporary card (a cracking little GTX 970 that ran at 1520/8000 all day long with no tweaking of anything) and needing yet another temporary graphics card for 1080p, I just ordered a Sapphire 390X for £264 delivered, "as new" condition so I assume open box. I also have the 290X Vapor-X on backorder for £243, supposed to be back in stock within the next couple of weeks. I figured I'll try how it goes with the 390X, if it's not to my liking I'll be able to return it with my conscious intact as it's already an open box item, and continue waiting for the 290X.

Thoughts, did I eff it up? I like the style of the Vapor-X card much better though.

+1

I was considering getting the 390 Nitro , but i a good deal on the 290X Vapor-X @ £216 so no brainer really.

Yeah, but ordering from abroad, my Vapor-X came to cost me quite a bit more, what with the shipping and the VAT adjustment to our local, entirely reasonable  level of 24%. Had it been £216 I wouldn't have sidetracked to this 390X I don't think.

Hey and wasn't it so that you received yours already? Is it a decent clocker?

Yeah i have had mine for a week now , purchased it from a UK supplier and delivered the next day, it seems to be alright so far , had it on 1130Mhz // 1375Mhz RAM without touching the voltage , and it says according to GPU-Z it is a 76% ASIC quality.

Got a score of 1453 on Heaven , but thats using a i7 930 on stock clocks.

Although its not just a 290x with more memory, the chip on it is a refresh not a rebadge. There are some improvements made to it.

So far no proof of actual improvements has surfaced; clock for clock they perform identically to 290X, though it must be said that not all (relatively few?) 290X can reach the 390X stock memory clocks. Core OC-potential seems to be identical.

its like when Intel took the Hot 4770k- made some improvements and included GFX to make Devils Canyon- the Refreshed & Added more VRAM and it runs cooler

Watched jaystwocents video on it

There is a thread on oc.net where people post their max overclocks and corresponding Firestrike score on 290/390 & 290X/390X cards; while the sample size is small, top 290X score within 100-200 points of top 390X.
