I'm looking at getting a private plate, on the DVLA website, it's format is XXXX XXX. This makes no sense when in this format, but can I print it to a format such as XXX X XXX. I'm thinking yes but I can't find any concrete statements saying that as long as it's displaying the reg and the letters/numbers meet the legal size and spacing. It can be printed in any format.

Thanks

If you add a space, afaik you are no longer meeting the "legal size and spacing"

The spacing between letters is legal, as is the font size. All I'm doing is altering the format in which it's printed.

I'll call Halfords though, good shout andicole0.

Then it's no longer a legal plate.
It's all quite simple and explained in pretty clear terms on the website.
If the plate you're buying is in the format:

LLNN LLL
Then spacing it as LLN N LLL is no longer legally spaced. So you're opening yourself up to a fine, initially, and then repeat offending you get the plate reported and "could" get it taken away.
So really - your call.

If you move any letters around or spacing it becomes illegal and if stopped you will be fined which has now gone up from the £60 it used to be.

I honestly don't see the point in getting a plate if you've got to move letters around.

Lets put it another way, your car gets stolen and drives through a ANPR camera however because you've changed the spacing it can't read it so it doesn't get flagged up.

Fair enough, thanks for the info. Ran a undersized plate on my motorbikes for years and never had an issue with police.

And as you know they're illegal too and if the fuzz really wanted they could fine you (I have one on my bike).

Same thing applies here, you'll probably be fine with the plate, but they're not legal. And coppers seems to dislike them more than slightly smaller plates on bikes. Plus dodgy spacing is chavy as **** as mentioned. :p

I'd space it how you like, you paid for the registration number. I see tons everyday which are mis-spaced, no one gives a ** Disguised swearing **. We will be getting our 2nd private plate in a couple of months, this one will be non-spaced all together. We've had the first one on for 2-3 months now, haven't been fined or stopped.

Everyone will think your a bit of a doorknob, thats what I think when I see people with plates with illegal fonts and silly names.

Awww, such hate! Haha, it's not 'chavy' in my eyes. Chavy is the italic fonts with some stupid logo and background.

This is simply turning a numberplate that makes no sense, to one that does :D

what is the plate then? as xxxx xxx nor xxx x xxx makes any sense tbf
My private plates says nowt but was on the car when I bought it, not a clue what it means or if its meant to say anythign (N5 ACN)
