Upcoming monitors before the end of this year?

Seems right now there seems to be a good selection of monitors that do well in some areas but lack in others.

Wish 34" 144hz superwide ips curved with g sync was a thing.

the problem is, when that kind of thing is available there will be something new that isn't then available on it. the market does move fairly fast for monitors so getting something with everything you want will take time, but your requirements may well change in the mean time

Personally I think the monitor market is moving extremely slowly in the last few years, only 3 interesting things have happened

- getting 144hz IPS (and only 2 of those available)
- g/free sync (again quite limited choice)
- 21.9 monitors (not a great deal of choice either)

In terms of the actual panels with regards to image quality, we seem to be stuck with more or less the same pros and cons for each panel type.

There are some sub £400 40" 60hz 3840x2160 HDMI 2.0 monitors available from certain other places at the moment, though of course VAT & import duties apply. Hopefully OCUK will be bringing in equivalent models at some point...

Personally would still wait for widespread adoption of HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.3 before shelling out on a long-term investment such as a humoungus monitor.

Yeah but just remember the sterile and boring few years before that, just hundreds of 1920x1080 with nowt to distinguish one from t'other :(

Now at least there is a lot of variety and competition WRT to aspect ratio, Sync technologies, colour gamut etc etc... and QuadHD has taken off a lot more than many ppl expected I think.

How far are we away from 4k IPS 144hz? That'll be my next upgrade unless I cave in and replace my 4k TN with a 4k IPS first.

I'd also add these developments and changes which have happened over the last few years, in no particular order:

  • adoption of strobing blur reduction backlight methods. started life as hacked NVIDIA 3D Vision but not several native blur reduction modes used including ULMB
  • arrival of high res 27" gaming panels. TN Film 27" panels finally reached above 1080p. Also 1440p IPS at high refresh rate as you've said
  • big improvements to coating on IPS-type panels, moving away from older grainy coatings people moaned about
  • internface improvements - DisplayPort wasn't very common a few years ago, now also HDMI 2.0, MHL, Mini DP etc
  • flicker free backlights finally becoming the norm for most manufacturers
  • additional eye care developments inc low blue light modes
  • 4k and Ultra HD resolutions readily available at many sizes and from many panel technologies. Even 5k in some cases
  • Proper development of alternative IPS-type technologies from AUO and Samsung, giving rivalry to LG.Display and bringing about interesting new changes like high refresh rates etc
  • ultra-wide screens as you've already said, but pushing larger sizes now like 34-35"
  • high refresh VA type panels. first we had the 24" 120Hz panel in the Eizo FG2421, soon we will have the 35" 144Hz panels in models like the BenQ XR3501 and Acer X35
  • coupled with that, response times of VA panels finally driven down to acceptable gaming levels. not just on the high refresh rate VA panels either
  • improvements in VA panel viewing angles, certainly noticeable changes
  • arrival of Quantum Dot for providing wide gamut colour spaces at more affordable costs (where needed)
  • USB 3.0 now integrated into most monitors, replacing USB 2.0

plenty changing in the market. Obviously not all of it interests everyone but my point is more that by the time you see a monitor covering everything you feel you want now, no doubt there will be something new along which is even better that you want :)

at high refresh rates, probably quite a long way away as would need DisplayPort 1.3, as well as very beefy graphics cards i expect :) 4k IPS with G-sync/FreeSync a reality now/soon but at 60Hz max

I been looking at getting a high quality gaming 144hz+ monitor for a while now,the prices combined with seemingly hit and miss QA on a lot of the higher end screens is rather off putting however..

I constantly come back to looking at the Eizo FG2421,high refresh-rate,with good pic and colour quality due to the VA panel. Is this still a good monitor for the money?

I suppose badass... I would definitely agree with the anti-glare finish too, I love that about my 29um65, the screen just has a "pop" effect to it

True that, I had my dell u2311h for about 6 years before my 29um65 as there was just nothing out there worth changing too.

Just a shame that customer care and quality control seem to have taken a step backwards with a few companies.

This is the biggest problem these days, it seems like this is going backwards :(

I really want to get that asus 27" IPS 144hz screen but I just know that I will get one with dead pixels or/and severe bleed/glow issues and then the thought of having to deal with asus after 14 days....

I am not too sure that it's going backward, more that monitors have got way more complex but people still want them for cheap.

Badass/PCM2/Gibbo

Any idea if we will have something along the lines of this before the end of the year?

- 27" 1440 144HZ VA/IPS free/g sync <£500

- 32" 4k VA/IPS free/g sync <£800

- 34" 1440 75+HZ VA/IPS free/g sync <£800

That isn't by acer or asus.

I see that Philips have a 32" 4k IPS due this month for £800 but no mention of g/free sync....

Also, why are we not seeing any good monitors by the likes of Samsung or Dell, it seems like only asus and acer are getting the good/exciting panels currently, is it just exclusivity deals? Or do they just not have any interest in monitors of those specs?

No, most of those things will come out from acer or asus and will be over the prices you have asked for. Asus MG279Q is probably your best bet for a cheap freesync 144hz IPS.

Well 1 of the main issues on monitors especially IPS monitors these days is the back light bleed, that is mostly down to the chassis assembly so could be easily avoided with proper design + build + QC checks.

I wouldn't call the likes of the acer 27" IPS 144hz, lg 34um95, dell u34 etc. cheap either especially when they were first released and I have no doubt that the upcoming acer 34" IPS freesync screen will be plagued with back light bleed issues and that will be costing £900+, heck I wouldn't even put up with dead pixels, bleed issues on a £200 screen.

I have never read as many reports about bleed, dead pixels, screens failing within a year as I have in the last year

How about the Benq XR3501? It's interesting if not for the price. Not available in EU/UK but newegg lists it for 1k$. I mean what's wrong with them guys in the pricing department?

Awful res. for a screen of that size + a heavy matte anti-glare coating and as you said, a rip of, no idea what benq was thinking of with adding an extra inch when the res. is already far too low for 34" and to make matters even worse, add a hazy glare finish on top :(
