Help me decide 660 or 270x

Darnit. Cardpool didn't send the email (or it vanished in the night), so took them 3 days instead of one to get my 200 dollars to me. Now the Gigabyte 380 4GB G1 is out of stock for 2 to 3 weeks :-(

MSI Gaming 4GB comes back into into stock on the 26th 30th, tempted to order that, although I was hoping that maybe the G1 would overclock better, due to apparent better selected chips? $225 in amazon (US) gift and nothing that is available lol. I don't want a 960 either.

Perhaps this lull gives me the opportunity to look again in the upto 250 dollars price range?

go with the 380; either gaming or G1 will be fine whichever is in stock; don't bother with 960 2 gig too spendy......

MSI gaming supposed to have a sweet cooler that's beefed up :) G1 is nice also; can double check a couple other places on prices

PCS+ is awesome cooler also.......I got the 290 and its a beast of a card......:)

and supposed to get 20 dollar giftcard with it :)

Can't use newegg now as I traded my gifts cars in for Amazon credit/gift cards. To be honest I am only considering the msi gaming 4gb and the gigabyte g1 (4gb). The msi I think will have better support but I am not sure if its overclocking potential compared to the g1 or the quality of the components compared to each other. It is so hard to find that info yet online.

Sorry off topic, but Scougar are you in Palo Alto or Philly?

(I'm also researching the 380, so I was reading the thread too :p )

Su

I'm in Philly(ish), down by the Delaware border.

I keep looking at the higher spec cards like the 390 but I don't want to have to buy a new PSU yet, so they are out (which sucks). If you have 100 more I would say that he 390/390x are definitely the cards to go for if you look around for a good deal.

For me, the 380 4GB will be more than enough. I'm not into GTA or Witcher, and given I have a 7850K APU, it's unlikely I'd get the best from a more expensive card anyway.

I prefer the look of the MSI Gaming and think the support and cooling might be better, I just like the Direct contact heat pipes on the Gigabyte and the potential for better overclocks if they are not lying about picking the best chips for the G1. The MSI Gaming card looks very nice I have to say and it has a 'front plate' as well under the the heatsink in addition to the back plate, whilst the G1 only appears to have a more regular heatsink on the VRM's and not on anything else.

And finally... just ordered the Gigabyte G1 380. They were selling out fast so I just did it. Hopefully it's a good one.

Really looking forward to being able to crank up the settings again.

The last decent card I owned before dropping to an apu was the 480 GTX, so this will be a nice improvement.

Should be here Tuesday.

Oh man... I don't think I've had a time being so indecisive about a purchase of a GPU!!

My budget is upto to $250 (ish).

270x (budget option at around $150/160)
285 2gb $190 to $229
380 4 gb at around $190 to $229
960 2gb at around $225.
290 (non-X reference card) at around $249.

There is the chance in the future that I will be looking to get a UHD or slighter lower res screen.

Scratch the 285 of this list as it is the same as a 380 with less ram,
I'd go 380 or 960.
However you could go 290 with a view to getting one of the stick on water coolers they do in the near future.
Having said that if I was you I'd go 960 or 380 and have a warranty. Can you get a Zotac 960 in the US? A 5 year warranty sounds worthwhile.

As in, stay away from AMD GPU's? (Sorry, it's kinda an obvious answer here lol). I don't see a good price/performance ratio with Nvidia though. The 960 seems more like a compromise card (narrow memory bus).

EDIT: ON another note, I just looked at a certain competitors 'warehouse' deals page... and the prices are hilariously overpriced for used items. More expensive than buying new in most cases.

Don't go with a 280x. There dated and the 300 series have much better tessellation performance which is needed as it is being used a lot more nowadays as we see from incidents like the Kepler performance drop issue, That's also why a 660 is a no go.

I think a 380 or a 960 is a good buy and will last a while, Looking at going free or G-sync when you upgrade your monitor is also a good idea, especially with mid range cards which it will help.

And now I get to the end of the thread and find all my other posts were pointless as you've already done the deed :(

I think you made a good decision by the way :D

Have fun.

as above. 270x all day.

:D

lol.

Well thank you for the advice anyway, hopefully people looking for info will find it.

BTW... The 270X is a good card and can often be found on sale for less than the 270. If you exclusively play at 1080p or below it is well worth buying.

For me, I wanted to use my other two monitors, and I was within 1% of 1440p res, so the 960 became not really viable, and the 380 4GB was the card that could handle that easily.

Just some feedback on the R9 380 G1 4GB. Extremely happy with this card. Performance is fantastic for the money. Don't really need to overclock it yet. It could be a bit quieter when pushed, but then I don't have front case fans yet, so thermals in the case itself could be better.

I wouldn't hestitate to recommend this card. I easily surpass 2GB in a lot of games, so glad I got the 4GB version.

Honestly, I don't think it really matters that much for overclocking which version you get, they all seem to get to 1100 to 1200mhz anyway.

7850K your CPU? if so stay away from AMD, huge bottleneck.
Turned out not to be a bottleneck btw.
