how do you get your music?

Genuine question. I'm not knocking it but why do people still buy vinyl?

My recollection of vinyl records was crackling and a deep, bassy sound. Also, my dads mediocre collection still took up a whole closet.

It's what i grew up with that and reel to reel tape decks have two like these old boys below

Looking at all the Spotify premium users I feel slightly dirty to admit I'm an Apple Music user. Have been very happy so far and will almost definitely be renewing my sub when the free trial runs out unless somebody can tell me why I should be using Spotify instead?

Love seeing all the Vinyl collections. Would like to get a decent desk and put some effort into starting a collection but it's never going to happen due to time, space and money constraints (I'd have to give up spending as much on PC and videogames for starters!). Also as music has become so easily accessible I'm very bad for skipping songs now, which means I don't always get into that zone when listening.

I use a combination of Google Play Music Unlimited, Buying CD's and ripping to Lossless FLAC via EAC or dbpoweramp. I then use Foobar2000 or Madsonic depending on where I'm listening to the music off my server or PC. I redid all of our CDs a few years ago given some of the original tracks were done in iTunes at 128kbps from the early '00 and sounded garbage.

If you're into electronic/edm/house etc Beatport is a pretty nice site, you get a lot of up and comers on their charts, usually stuff you can't find elsewhere.

I'd also recommend soundcloud but their search and exploration functionality is absolute garbage.

The album art & picture disks are why I love vinyl.

Hang picture discs on your wall in plastic sleeves and it looks awesome.

The best looking cd I have is imprinted to look like vinyl

What does that tell you ?

Oh yeah.. I get my music mainly from Amazon & Amazon d/ls for one off songs.

eg: I actually liked our Eurovision entry this year so bought the song from Amazon D/l

A variety of sources. Spotify, internet radio, free DJ sets/mixes (great way of discovering new progressive-house music), Beatport and Bandcamp, some less-legal means usually when something is hard to find legally.

I've also started buying CDs again in the last year or so, mostly 'bvdub' because I love his music and really like the idea of having a physical copy. They can become quite hard to track down after a while too and you never know how long something will stay on Spotify etc for so I'd rather have my own perfect copy.

I download music from places like iTunes and occasionally buy CDs, they all end up on my PC. I've never been tempted by streaming services - what happens when the service stops or changes to a point is becomes too expensive or unsuitable?

lol

This thread made me go take a lookie what was in my Cassette Player... I haven't turned it on in probably 20 odd years.

Sorry for the bad singing

This thread has made me sick - I used to have a Logic DM101 turn table with Linn Basik arm and Supex cartridge - just checked on prices - hell's teeth and I gave mine away.

Also sold my Audiolab 8000 for 80 quid -- Duh!!

Buy it on CD, then rip.

Prefer ripping it to a lossless format, and none of the big outlets offer this. If they did, I'd jump to them and ditch the CDs.

Everything in our house was Alba. The stereo, the alarm clocks, the kitchen TV. My old man was a right old cheapskate :D

Or like mine grew up in an era when cheap meant doing without a few luxury features but otherwise was as solid reliable product, before the days of mass import of cheap tat from the far east. He still has it ingrained quite a bit so often buys cheap then has to buy 3-4x before giving up and spending a bit more and ends up spending twice as much or more than if he'd bought something a little more expensive in the first place that would last 10-20x longer.

awesome ! :P

you totally set me up for some 80s music later tonight :D

I'm one of the people still buying CDs - recently invested in an IKEA bookcase so that I can have them all on display in the living room.

For me it's definitely about the collecting rather than the convenience though.
