Just bought an Xb1 on eBay, paid for it, seller immediately refunded me and apologised that he had put his wifes e-mail down for the paypal transaction instead of his.

He's now sent a money request to me for the amount to his e-mail, but it's not linked to the listing in any way and is listed as 'goods'

He only has 7 feedback, albeit all positive, am I protected if I go ahead with this? Seems like an easy way out for them as to eBay it will never look like I've purchased the item, he's saying he will mark it as payment received but obviously everyone would say that.

Don't do it - there are ways around this while still being protected by PayPal. I made a similar mistake on a sale a while back. Just get him to realist it with the new email address as a buy it now. He can appeal the eBay fees on the old sale and will get them back. There are other options for him too.

Yeah I've asked him to either relist it for the amount I paid or change the e-mail on the current one if he can do that

I wouldn't even bother, if he's trying something like that who knows what other trouble you might have. It's just an Xbox, plenty more out there.

I honestly don't believe people when they say they put their partners email address down for something by mistake. It's just something most normal people wouldn't make a mistake on. Most people have had their email address a long time and it's like getting your name mixed upo with your wifes

Surely his wife can just transfer him the money?

Exactly. And your PayPal account is linked to your eBay account. It's not like u pick and mix from a list and he selected his wife's by mistake.

At best the seller is just trying to avoid eBay selling fees. At worse it's a total scam.

Either way the op won't be protected.

Yeah exactly what I thought, years ago I did the same mistake when me and my Bro used to share an account, but when it happened as mentioned I just sent it via PayPal to the account I wanted it to go to.

Ebay just seems to get worse and worse every day for scamming and shady behavior. I feel very reluctant to use it anymore even though I have never had any issues personally.

No don't do it - if you did it would be no different that buying an item in the classified ads in your local newspaper. Would you then be prepared to send him the money through paypal?

It's not exactly a rare item so it's not worth the hassle, just buy another one from a different seller.

Annoying though. I once bought a full 5.1 wharf dale 8 speaker set with front flooring speakers for 50 when they sold new for 500. Seller declined to ship them to me as he said they sold for way under market value. :(

As has been said many a time in other threads, ebay is a basically dead form of purchasing anything significant these days.

Good for the little things from china or things you aren't too worried about. For the likes of anything large, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Rule #1 of ebay:

If it isn't 100% within ebay's ts&cs, if there is even 0.000001% a chance that it could be a scam, it more than likely is.

Given the amount of ebay threads we see on here I'm surprised ebay exists at all.
