A3 / Golf Gtd / Scirocco..?

Defiantly have a good choice of a few cars there with your budget

A3 1.8tfsi 180bhp i have the 1.4tfsi for a work car at the min and its great for that purpose I've had it for 2 years now and just about to change it for a 2 series but have enjoyed it for that time.

nice car but bottom of the market but good engine and up to date platform and great to drive.

Not a LCI but your not going to get one on your budget but if you were thinking of a D then i would chose this over a GTD Golf

Red GTD for comparison test drove one for 5 days really liked it on the first 2 days then became very boring and after this and chose not to have one.

Test drove or owned most of the above and the nicer one for me was the 2 series i know its not a hatch but a coupe but still was the nicest to drive for me out of the 4.

Interior wise the Audi was the best place to be but im biased since ive been in one for 2 years but the mmi is great and the sound system is amazing but i did spec the B&O system in mine which i will miss in the 2 series given the shocking h&k issues when it was released. The seats are very good and it was great and comfy to travel around Cornwall in.

For 20K I would look to a 14 plate Mercedes C class rather then another Golf.
OP has been discussing warm/hot hatches for the most part and you suggest a dagdag repmobile C Class. The interior of that model is dated, the in-car-entertainment system also, and it's not really where I'd be sinking that much money when you can get an older example for less.

Completely agree even if he were looking for a saloon i would never recommend this budget on that car its a 6 year old design the new C Class has just come out and the above car looks completely dated in comparison.

Get a 1.4 Petrol A3 Sportback, if you don't do the miles you don't need a diesel. The interior and exterior of the A3 looks better than the others (my opinion obviously) and surely it'll hold it's value more than a Golf in the long run negating the extra cost when purchasing.

I get around 450-470 miles per tank on my 1.4 TFSI a3 mine is the earlier 140 though and mine is also Stronic so might be a tad better on fuel too. but it is a great engine for overtaking and doesn't feel slow at legal speeds at all.

I don't get much more out of my 1.6TDI, not sure if that tanks are different though. Saying that, I don't do many long journeys anymore so that likely knocks my MPG down a bit.

I test drove the A3, Scirocco, and Golf just over a year ago and the Audi was bland inside and out, it seriously needs an update. The Scirocco was nice but just too small inside and the gap between the sill and seats required a taxi to get out of the car. The Golf was perfect and IMO the Mk7 is the best looking one yet.

This looks bland compared to the golf i don't agree but each to there own :p

Is 1.4 tsi in a3 twin charged? Like mine in my fabia vrs. It drinks a lot of oil. Had the new jets fitted not long ago. It does reduce the oil usage.

Would i own a car with same engine again. No

I have a mk7 GTD, looking back I wish I'd gone for the GTI (well, wish I'd not bothered with the company scheme and got an R on the cheap leases ;) ). Although one of the reasons for getting it was the work scheme were knocking them out very cheap so was worth a go.

The GTD made more sense and it is a good car, inside is nice, kit level is good, just not a big fan of the engine. Not that it's bad, just not a big fan of the dag dag compared to the nice petrols I've had in the past.

Apart from that gripe it's hard to fault it really, it does what it does, looks ok and do like the interior.
