AMD Radeon R9 390 vs GeForce GTX 970

They're very close so it's not clear-cut, I'd look at benchmarks for your preferred games as the best guide.

970 has a healthier range of 2nd hand choices which would make it the better value pick if you're open to that.

For some reason I read 1440p as 144Hz (I'd then assumed 1080p).

In that case, I would agree on the 390 - it's strength seems to be at higher resolutions (and with a healthy advantage in VRAM that will probably remain the case).

I've been trying to figure out what's the best value card for 1080/1440 these days and 390 seems to be it. Unless you play Project Cars which is hugely bias towards Nvidia, but then again it's not a fast paced FPS style game so AMD still puts out decent performance, AMD is also boasting a couple more fps with new drivers in that game and a good chunk more performance with windows 10 which makes it more than acceptable.

So 390 unless you have a need to go Nvidia, in which case get a 970...or better yet a 2nd hand 970...or wait for next year if you are not desperate to upgrade now. I would go for a 980ti, no I wouldn't, it makes no sense but it kind of makes sense, I don't know, my head hurts, why couldn't Fury X be better, I hate the current GPU market, lets just sit on our hands until it starts to be more competitive.

I know, right?!

The fact that Pascal is supposedly a much bigger jump than usual makes it even harder, which is why I find myself looking at the 390 (value king that it is) and asking if I should be so excited about refreshed old card...

As far as I can tell, this mental spiral has no end.

That pretty much sums up my decision - where is the best place to get the R9 390? Seems pricey when compared with the GTX 970. Cheapest I could find is here on OCUK.. £270 w/delivery.

Most of the 390's have good coolers and are about the same price as the 970 unless you go for the cheaper 970 variants which will have poorer heatsinks like the Zotac and Palit reference for around £240.
I would not recommend the basic 970's since they can get to 80C under load. Look for the cards for around £260+ range and you should be fine.

The Sapphire 390 Nitro has a good cooler and runs pretty quite.

When I do checkout on OCUK it says £8.00 shipping ex VAT.. but when I do paypal payment it says without any shipping charge.. Why is there no shipping charge when paying by paypal? I just want to confirm that it will not include shipping after making initial payment?
