Plusnet increase line rental

Does this break the contract?

Yes as it's a mid term change on a key component of the contract, I. E. The price, so I have carte blanch to jump ship if I want to.

I'm just not sure I'll get a better deal elsewhere as I use the landline solely for Internet, don't want a TV package etc.

I may just drop down to a 40mb fttc connection but I belive most of these have a download cap which may constrict me, i can cope with halving the speed easily but I'd still want uncapped downloads.

Yeah just had an email today, BT upping the costs of line rental by £1 p/m again.

Their excuse - we need this money to bring you more sports, and AMC, to a TV service you don't even have or use.

Utter tripe, I remember when Line Rental was more like £12 p/m standard, not even that long ago!

Aye it's quiet annoying when I agreed to a contract because of the price and now they're increasing costs for services I do not use. Shouldn't the cost be offset on the very service that's causing the increase!

Yup got that today as well. I do pay yearly, so fine for a while, but next year will cost more :(. All for stuff I don't use. Also they mentioned a £40 one off charge for activated AMC, didn't they? Ridiculous.

Bit cheeky that they pretty much force you to pay for these services. I have BT sport, some sort of cloud storage and all the other crap they offer. Can't I just have cheaper broadband / line?

Yeah I don't even have a phone connected to my line.

All of the providers just raise price at the same time though, so no winner even if I can switch mid contract, if I go somewhere else I will just get the same pricing increase.

BT have just raised their line rental by £1 a month also. I got an Email about it today. I was going to cancel with them when my contract is up in December anyway.

Am I correct in assuming that I can leave now without incurring any costs?

If you received the same email I did then the final paragraph reads:

We want to make sure you get the best deal for you. So, if you want to change something, or even leave because of these price changes, and you're within your minimum contract period, you'll need to call us within 30 days of receiving this email to avoid paying a charge for leaving early. You'll need to give us 30 days' notice to leave (or 14 days5 if you're switching provider), starting from the date you ask us. We won't charge you the increased price during that time.

I got the same Email. I will be phoning them tomorrow to cancel.

Actually I am going with Plusnet next as they are cheaper than BT and their line rental is still cheaper

Hmmm trouble is, there isn't a cheaper alternative with good customer service even with cashback.

Agreed, although I don't know how SSE will turn out. I still like Plusnet as a cheap mass market ISP(mainly for helpful UK based support), just a bit worried that there are recent signs of them possibly becoming a bit "TalkTalk-ified".

Force communication providers to advertise the cost of their 'broadband' packages as being the total price - inclusive of the line rental that is required, and the broadband price after any introductory offers - and this issue of hiking line rental to subsidise broadband will disappear overnight.

Openreach pricing for the line is £5.79 per year more than it was in 2008. Anything above £8.75 per month inc VAT is margin for the service provider.

Plusnet have offered me this deal: (the price is much the same as SSE but far cheaper than SSE)

Fibre Unlimited Extra with up to 80Mbps down and up to 20Mbps up with unlimited usage £12.50 for 24 months (saving of £179.76 off)

Line Rental £0.00 for 12 months (saving of £48.00 off) if paying upfront LRS £155.88 one off fee before 2nd September 2015

Anytime Call Plan (inc free calls to 01, 02, 03, 0845, 0870 and NGT Typetalk) £6.00 per month

Static IP Address £0.00 (free of charge)

Referral Discount -£2.50

Monthly charge £16.00 (with a saving of £227.76) with a minimum of 24 months contract.

What does your internet connection use if not the land line?

I don't think i've read one decent post from on this forum from you.

I have Virgin but without a landline the broadband cost is the same as with a landline. I don't think I've read a post from you that's worth the pixels it's written on

You get charged Line Rental because Openreach charge CP's and ISP's Line Rental for the line, regardless of what the line is used for. If Openreach changed their policies (and they won't) then ISP's could change theirs. Until that time, you'll be charged Line Rental.
