Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

If you're only really wanting to use it as a plex server and don't need the extra functionality of a full windows installation then go for full-fledged XPEnology :)

That's what I did with my Gen8s... I only needed them as file servers.

You can use all of the Synology plugins... I don't use Plex myself, but others do.

I use cloudsync on one and that's about it for plugins on mine.

I have 2x Synology DS214js & 2x Gen8s running XPEnology... but then I also built myself my own fileserver (older than the NASes) which runs Win Server 2008R2... but then I like having fully fledged windows to remote desktop on to. If I didn't already have this, then one of the Gen8s would likely have had Win Server installed... but then I don't have to pay for licenses, so that makes a difference to my usage choice.

Well i think i'll keep win 8 on it with yper V running XPEnology and give loads of resorces to the virtual machine then if i do want to play at somepoint (chances are i will) then i'm covered. So if i sept up my 4 x 3tb as single raid drives in the smart array i can use XPEnology to RAID 5 them?

Sorry, price promotion, not cashback. They've been sitting at the £300ish mark for a couple of weeks and they're down to ~£160 at least this week.

I wouldn't recommend that... adding the extra layer is asking for trouble, especially with a data array.

When you setup a raid-5 array, all data will be wiped.

So if that's what you want, it would be better to do it now rather than later.

But yes, if you were going with XPEnology, you would set up each drive as its own raid-0 array in the smart array and then XPEnology will automatically configure them as a raid-5 or "synology hybrid" array.

Taken what i have on there off and now going to download hypervisor (when the website is up again) and split the raid. Cheers for the advice :)

The one I'm building for work is rather fully loaded apart from the unit itself:

Entry level Microserver - don't need much horsepower and I was on a budget!
4GB RAM (The 2GB from mine is doing nothing so being donated)
P420 RAID controller (not officially supported but works fine in mine - allows 8x internal drives, hot swap etc.)
2x WD Black 500 2.5" RAID 1 for the OS
4x 6TB WD Red RAID 10 for the data
Server 2012 R2 Std

Replacing the POS WD DX4000 that we used to use.

Dual use. Backup target and fileserver for archive data that needs to be readily available but not worth taking up space on the main servers.

My Gen8 arrived today (Replacing my old N40l), I've seen people mention brackets to house an SSD in the CD rom slot, can anyone recommend a bracket that works well?

The ones I have allow 2x2.5" adjacent to the PSU and either a DVD drive or if you use one of those caddys in the shape of a DVD drive, another 2.5"

They would be Ideal but I'm in Melbourne :( can yo give me the link of the place you bought them from?

I just plugged it in and placed it down on a bit of packing foam.

The server is never moved so it's not going to be flapping about from normal useage, saves cash on brackets.

Anyone installed windows 10 on the n54l or gen8 yet.

Interested to know if the n54l still has the same issue with windows 10 as with win8.1 and not installing the lan driver?

Thanks

Morning

Got a hard-drive degraded message on my gen 8 last night (xpenology) for my root drive. It's just over 1 month old!!! Got 2x3tb wd reds in SHR. How can it be broken already? Is it something reading it incorrectly?

For those with a GEN8 running ESXi.

Are you using the stock VMWare image or the HP one?

Installing to a SDCard, I can use the Stock one, but the HP image breaks the box by dropping the /volumes after around 10mins, even by installing the VMWare image and applying the HP offline bundle.

Using the stock image I get no drive monitoring in any way, so I'm looking at a way of getting those sensors working.

Has anyone installed the HP image to the SD card or know of any issues in doing so?

Thanks.

Hi,

Finally got round to setting up my Gen8. I'm upgrading from an N40L using Windows 2012 R2 with Software Raid 5. What's the best way to configure the onboard disk controller so I don't loose my data? Do I configure each disk as a Raid 0 disk?
