Morning all,

I *think* I may have killed my motherboard. I moved it out of an old case into a new one yesterday and it wouldn't power on at all.

  • Reset all connections - no good
  • Removed everything except for 1 stick of ram, cpu, and cooler - no good
  • Removed motherboard from case and tested - no good
  • Checked PSU using "paperclip" trick - PSU fan comes on
  • Checked case power switch - reseated - no good
  • Swapped power switch for one in old case - no good
  • Tried shorting the power header with a screwdriver - no good
  • Removed and reseated CPU - no good
  • Reset Bios by removing battery - no good

When I plug the 24-pin connector in, just as it connects, there is a "click" sound and the CPU fan moved a fraction and then ... nothing.

For reference the motherboard is a GA-880GM-UD2H with an AMD 965 Black Edition. The PSU is a 1000w taken from a lenovo server.

Is there anything else I can try?

Are you using 24pin extensions at all?
What did you test it on when you removed the build from the PC? The most common issue is shorting on the case.

I was using a 24pin extension but removed that and plugged in the 24pin straight from the psu to no avail.

I "tested" the motherboard out of the case on some cardboard resting on a table.

It does feel like the board is shorting out but I can't find anything that looks like it could cause that.

Edit: I've now tested the PSU on it's own with a HDD attached to it and when turned on the PSU fan spins and I can hear the HDD spin up.

everything has been removed, down to just the cpu and the fan. When I push the 24pin psu connected on slightly it clicks and the fan moves ever so slightly, but that's it. I've also tried shorting the power connector pins and two power switches and again nothing.

I've resorted to a single fan plugged into the sys fan header and no cpu and nothing else and still it won't fire up.

I guess it's time to give up on the board and just replace it.

Why are you building it with the PSU live?

So ya get a little movement if you press down on the power connector? If so just check non of the connector pins inside the plug have pushed out a little, one might just need clicking back into place.

Do you have a motherboard speaker you can use? And if so do you get any beeps when you try to start the PC with no RAM attached at all?

well turns out it was the motherboard after all. Replaced it and all is well. thanks for the advice anyway.
