"Japanese video game giant Nintendo beat expectations to swing to a net profit in its fiscal first quarter of this year.

Its net profit was 8.28bn yen ($67m; £43m) in the three months to June as sales in the quarter rose over 20%.

That compares to a net loss of 9.9bn yen in the same period a year ago.
The company's earnings were boosted by the double digit rise in sales on new game releases such as Splatoon for its Wii U console and a weaker yen."

This is pretty good news to me as Im quite a Nintendo fan and still think they deserve a place in the market. Amiibos have been massively successful for them it seems.

When you consider Sony profits http://www.wsj.com/articles/sony-profit-surges-in-first-quarter-1438236740 , Nintendo do very well for a company with purely game related products and merchandise.

I think it would be a sad sad day if Nintendo stop being competitive.

They might drop out of the console game but as long as they make good games, I think that is most important.

how? the WiiU is dead, I dont get Amiibos things seems pointless and the DS is for kids, which must be the only thing keeping them afloat

I've been pretty tempted to pick up a Nintendo handheld, and it's always nice seeing them make profit. While not competitive, they do have their own style which works.

How? Probably because what you've said isn't true, maybe?

You not getting Amiibos doesn't mean people don't get them, what a bizarre notion. I don't get them either, but that is utterly beside the point.

The DS isn't for kids either.

It sounds like you're just not a Nintendo fan.

Recently bought a Wii U (for the OH honest :D ) I've been pleasantly surprised to find myself drawn to playing it. It's got some great really fun games, loving Splatoon at the minute.

Still not 100% on the gamepad, it's heavy, battery only lasts a few hours (already ordered a larger capacity one) and whilst the console itself is cheap, all the different controllers add up, batteries and even a USB lan adapter, maybe that's how Nintendo is making all its money... Accessories ;) :D

They don't need to directly compete, as they've shown the last two generations.

The Amiibos are frankly ridiculous. Having to buy cheap plastic figurines to unlock your whole game? If it was Sony or Microsoft they would be pilloried for it. Never underestimate the amount of goodwill and brand loyalty Nintendo have in the bank.

Nintendo are an extremely cash rich company, not going to google the figures but its mega and could make a loss for many many years.

I don't own a Nintendo console but have had them all in the past and love seeing them do well, part of me wants them to make games for other consoles with more power.
Just so I can play them but it wouldn't be the same without a Nintendo console out there.

yet you'd think after the Wii U the goodwill and fanboyism would have dried up

As much as some people want them to vanish it's just not going to happen. Never understood the hatred towards a company that had such a big positive impact on the industry in general.
That said, I'll continue enjoying the top quality games they consistently produce whilst other s moan about hardware and other things that don't affect them, bet I'm the happier of both parties :D

Funny thing is, a lot of the people who bemoan their hardware and churning out of Mario etc are the same people who stand by Apple devices and buy FIFA/COD every year :)
Gamers are a fickle bunch.

What I agree about your Fifa/cod comment what's Apple got to do with it? Oh wait it's cool to hate apple now, despite producing some of the most user friendly devices ever and totally cornering a whole market with one product, but yeah keep on hating, mobile gaming will kill the DS before long and Nintendo need to branch out to other platforms with their games

The highest selling games console has something to worry about?

I'm not sure why all the hatred towards Nintendo, they don't have any money problems and are have free reign to appease their current fanbase - which they do very well.

A very biased and stereotyped viewpoint. I think you'll find the 3DS is owned by quite a varied demographic and has sold very well indeed.
