Hello

Are there any licence requirements on renting a car abroad? (length of time having held one is my question.)

I've just booked a 7 day holiday in Tenerife in two weeks time (paid over the odds getting one this late) and I'm looking to rent a car while I'm over there. Just did a quick search and got a ford fiesta for 90 quid, full to empty yada yada. (they want 6 quid a day extra for a booster seat?! Will find a yellow pages methinks)

I got my licence 6 months ago and have been driving since, but I'm just worried that a car rental company might want a driver that has held a licence for longer.

Will I be denied car rental if I pay the rental and show up and they look at my licence and say no?

It says this on their FAQ

What documents do I need when collecting my hire car?
You must have a driving license in your name from your home country Type 3 and/or Type B (Euro-Standard). The licence must be valid in the country of rental. Licences that are not valid in the country of rental must be accompanied by an international licence. In most countries, it is mandatory for the driver to have held a valid driving licence for a least one year. Some countries require the driver to have held a driving licence for at least three years. In addition, the driver must present a valid passport/identity card and a credit card in his or her name. A driving licence and identification must also be presented for any additional drivers.

I'd like to have a car to explore the island, since I think it works out quite cheap, just worried my 6 month old licence will stop me.

help appreciated.

As a completely random guess, it's probably going to be mandatory for you to have held a valid driving licence for a least one year. Some countries may even require you to have held a driving licence for at least three years.

Your best bet is to phone the rental company, as unless anyone on here happens to work for the (as yet un-named) rental company you're looking at, we're not going to be able to give you an accurate answer ;)

A lot of hire car firms fill the tank up and bill you for it before you collect the car. You don't get the money back from petrol you don't use plus they charge you extra from the fuel. Of course you may not even need a full tank.

In Tenerife I used this company who are well regarded: http://www.autoreisen.es/ingles/tenerife_car_hire.php The car was a bit tatty in places (after the first one broke down on me but they collected it and dropped a new one off) but I paid 48 euros for a week for a seat ibiza. The desk in arrivals was very busy but well worth it given the savings.

Used Autoreisen for the first time this year in Lanzarote

Yes it may not be as new a car but for €60 for a week it was a bargain.

Hired half full and returned half full. Got a Citroen C Elysee on 30k which served its purpose. No issues with car and will certainly use them again.

Based on what you've quoted, i imagine you'll find yourself having problems not having held a license for at least a year.

It says 1 year minimum driving licence with this company

Also cheapest I can get on that is a twingo for £101. Dates I'm going are 16th to 24th Aug. Cheapest car I've found is a fiesta for 90 quid with Cardelmar.

Quite annoying if I can't manage to get a car, as I really want the freedom of a car to explore the island. I have my own car and I'm a pretty confident and safe driver. My friends who have held their licences for 5+ years have never driven since passing their tests and tell me they wouldn't feel confident at all driving a car now.. mad that

I've just sent an email to the company (CardelMar) and hopefully I can get one. Or can just arrive in person and ask them to allow me to demonstrate me doing slaloms and doughnuts which will impress them enough perhaps...

Haha you can try! I've been to Tenerife lots of times and only this year hired a car. It allowed us to go to Lorro Parque as we were staying in Costa Adeje. The bus trips to the north of the island are brutal. You can also go to Mount Tiede etc as well.

The wind was so strong along the coast the Seat Ibiza was being blown across the roads, made some of the journey quite hairy!
