I've just bought a Pro Gamer Tower PC Configured with a Z97X Gigabyte Gaming 7.

When I add my SSD with win 8.1 preloaded, it boots up and loads Windows, but none of the USB ports work. Since my keyboard and mouse are both USB I cannot enter anything!

I tried another SSD with Win 7 which DOES load Windows with USB working, so does booting Linux Mint from a DVD give me USB, but just Win 8.1 does NOT.

There must be some BIOS setting to sort this out.

Suggestions please.

Doubt its a BIOS setting more a driver issue.

As if it works under win7 without altering anything in the BIOS then that suggests they are enabled.

Have you tried USB2 and 3.0 ports?

I found a tip elsewhere to disable xHCI in the BIOS. When I did that, my USB started working, both USB2 and USB3.

However, I wonder what else has been changed?

This is slightly different for me. I have to set this to 'Enabled'.

If left on Auto or Smart Auto, then the ports will be stuck at usb2 speeds.

An Update.

I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro on Monday afternoon, leaving the xHCI disabled. My USB continued to work, so my Mouse and Keyboard were OK.

I've just now gone back into BIOS and re-enabled xHCI as Smart Auto. My USBs, including mouse and keyboard have continued to work.

It appears to be a Windows 8.1 issue only.
