So had my eyes tested yesterday and as i expected i need glasses, now im a funny bugger and the only frames i liked were £280 from specsavers. They are oakley carbon plate in black, anyone have experience with on-line prescription glasses, and is it safe, am i going to get what i ask for?

Cheers

Only used Glasses Direct, but found them to be brilliant. Got an email a couple of days ago with a new offer:

50% off frames
Free second pair
Free dark tints
Up to 40% off lenses

Use code '4IN1'

You pick up to four frames at a time. They send them to you to try on. Send the frames back, order more, buy the ones you like. Great service TBH and a fraction of the price of a high street optician.

I would very much like peoples recommendations here too. Have seen Mr Spex online but i'm unsure if glasses is something that should really be bought in person rather than online!

My girlfriend got her specs from there. Ordered 3 or 4 pairs, picked out the ones she wanted and sent the others back. Then she just popped into the local vision express to get them fitted correctly to her face.

I've used Glasses Direct many times over the years (I'm wearing some specs from them as I type). Cashback via TopCashBack too.

I've also used SpeecyFour Eyees and found them just as good, although you don't get the Hometrial option with S4E.

What did Vision Express actually do?

Only wondering, as to my understanding if you have your prescription and can measure your Pupillary Distance then you're all set. Glasses Direct could send you a complete pair of glasses that work as well as ones that an optician has 'fitted'.

The only exception here is Variofocals. Those need to be done by an optician as the measurements need to be very precise.

Sounds good!

I live in a rural area so I dont have access to the usual high street chains of opticians, only a local one.

Would probably feel bad going there for an eye test and not ordering from him though, but I want the extra choice and you can't argue with the prices.

I've used glasses direct and they were fine, but recently I've used Selectspecs a couple of times as they had the Oakley frames that I wanted, also the trivex lenses they do are superb.

VE would adjust the frames essentially to ensure they sit correctly or "fit" to your face. You'd be surprised how many people have one ear slightly higher than the other...

I've used Glasses Direct and Selectspecs along with a few others. No issues and I've been buying glasses online for years and years.

don't underestimate the importance of getting the PD correct - mess it up and you can get some serious headaches and nausea :(
You can measure it with a ruler (easier if someone helps) or get a neat little device for a couple of quid from Ebay that makes it easier - you're right, if you get it wrong you will get headaches and your prescription will basically just feel "wrong" - apparently the average is 63mm, mine is nothing of the sort!

just gave it a go and it stole my CVV number off my credit card...

(i'd be a little wary of taking a photo of the back of a real card! Sure they can't do much without the front but still.)

Anyhows, yes looks like its pretty much spot on :)

I sent them an older pair of my glasses to measure from, didn't trust myself to get it right considering every time i measured it seemed to be different. Not really an option when you're getting your first pair though.

Well quite... a little common-sense etc. I just used a stale card when I tried. I believe it bases the depth calculation using the magnetic strip.
