Could be all kind of explanations - including some really ****** ones like variations of Boltzmann's brains where our whole universe only exists as a construct in the mind of an entity that exists in another universe that has no awareness of that universe and we (each person) are all just compartmentalised sub-systems of that larger brain.

Can the universe be broken down to discrete planck length units of "matter"? If a unit is there its a 1 otherwise its a 0. These fundamental units are literally just information. 1 or 0. So yes, its a big computer.

This isn't something we should even be thinking about TBH. Imagine if it is true and someone, in a bid to prove that it is true, manages to break the simulation. We'd all be wiped out. That would suck. It would prove that we were never 'real', but I'm not sure the cost would be worth it.
