Hi guys,

I'm planning my first foray into watercooling in the not-so-distant future and have a question regarding some EK pump/res combos.

I've seen a lot of people using the EK xres 140 in builds and I like the look of it too.

OcUK stock what look to be three different types of this pump on the page here:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=962&catid=2133&subid=1845

They're called the EK-D5 vario, EK DDC-3.2 Xres and the EK Xres 140-D5.

Can someone explain the difference between these pumps and which are better?

Cheers

Just been shopping for one myself, so did a bit of looking around...

Near as I can see, the X-Res 100 or 140 is just the 100ml or 140ml tube on the top. The rest is to do with the different pumps.

On that page:
- DDC pumps are more for compact builds and is older, louder and not especially well-rated these days.
- D5 pumps are the newer, better kind with quieter operation and higher flow. PWM ones are controlled by your motherboard CPU_FAN header, just like PWM fans. Vario ones have a manual dial underneath to set the speed yourself (bear access to this in mind when planning your build).

Never found out much about the DCP, but the D5 types were so overwhelmingly recommended and favoured, I just went with one of those - D5 Vario with the X-Res 100 combo package.

Thanks for your response mate.

So with the PWM version can I still control this via software/BIOS?

I have a EK PWM DDC 3.2 which I control via the motherboard and its not loud at all as long as you use it this way. I think the pump has improved a lot recently and EK are using it for their new expandable Predator AIO, so they seem happy that it forms the basis for water-cooling entry. The size of the res is all about aesthetic really, so go for as big as you can to show off the colour and help with trapped air release.
As others have said, if I had a way to mount the D5, I would go with that, as it does seem to be a better pump, but due to its shape, you need a mounting mechanism.

In short, yes.
However, you'll probably want to PWM-control corresponding fan speeds on the radiator(s) as well. I'm not much into PWM myself, as I prefer to fiddle with everything manually (Lamptron fan controller).

The EK ones do come with a right-angled bracket-type-thing.
Looks like this: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=WC-855-EK

You either find two holes, or drill them somewhere suitable and bolt it into the case with the hardware supplied. I found my HDD cage has some very conveniently placed holes.
However, EK also do other types of bracket, including one that mounts to a 120mm fan (existing fan or just an empty mounting point) which I'm also considering.

I used the X-Res 100 with a D5 Vario for my first foray into water cooling. I wound it down to min for blipping whilst filling to prime the loop (so I didn't run it dry), then have just stuck it on max and can't hear it.

Been using DDC pumps for the past 10 years or so (Got a DDC X-res 100 at mo)- solid build and very reliable hence would recommend one over a D5 easily.
