Looking for a decent small smartphone for girlfriend that last her till end of next year when her contract runs out, as she manage to loose her S5 mini & wasn't insured.

Seen the Galaxy Alpha going for around £260 new sim free in silver, which is not bad considering they where over £500 just a year ago.

She not into big phones so I'm thinking the Galaxy Alpha will be ideal, plus having slightly better specs in some area's over the S5 mini mainly in the memory and cpu department & looks aswell.

So is it worth buying one today considering the price they at now?

Z3C was my first choice, but she doesn't want a Sony phone she always had Samsung so is use to it's layout with Touchwiz, she doesn't like change lol.

The new Moto G for £209 for the 2GB version is abit of a rip off really, when you can get much better phone from last year for not much more these days.

Agree the Alpha is a good choice it was under appreciated at the time but got really good benchmark scores and feels nice in the hand.

why? it's nothing special and the Alpha has a better camera, price and build.

Its only to tie her over for a bit the alpha is an extra 60 or so quid which is a high % at this price bracket and she already knows and likes the s5 mini so its not an unkown

Not forgetting it comes with a Wolfson DAC also, something I'm very interested in tbh. :D

I've just ordered the Alpha from Amazon, be here tomorrow if it's stacks up to be a decent little phone I may consider buying myself one aswell.

The Alpha showed up today what a nice little phone it is in silver, screen good aswell considering it's only 720p, so much so I've just ordered myself one same colour. :)

For the price it now going for it a decent buy.

Had one for a while, couldn't fault the build quality, screen although 720 was superb , colours popped. Only let down for me was the lack of expandable memory.....looked stunning in the Scuba blue colour I had.

Looking at the Galaxy Alpha as a new phone for my wife....was in the local Samsung shop today and they didn't have any....apparently it was discontinued as it was (according to the shop assistant) "an experiment for the A series." Which as far as I can tell came out only 3 months after the Alpha.

Which would people recommend, the Alpha or the A5? Or is the S5 mini worth considering?

My friend has one and he is very itchy to get rid of it.
He paid full price for it at release which imo was a HUGE mistake for what it was.
The current price is more agreeable.
I dunno what other options are in that price bracket but id consider all.

I've had mine since December and it's been a fantastic phone.

Originally at the time I was going to go for something like the S5 but I felt that it was just too big for me and I didn't really fancy going back to the Nexus 5 again and then I read about these as they feature similar specs and have a similar feel to the Note 4 (again, love the look of the phone but wayyy to big!).

As others have mentioned the Alpha wasn't promoted as a flagship or vigorously when compared to the likes on the S5 / Note 4, it simply made a quiet appearance on the market. I read about it online, then had a play with one in CPW and the following evening I made the purchase for one SIM free.

I use mine a lot at work as well as home and it really has been run into the ground the past few months and hasn't let me down yet. The only minor grumble I have about it is that the battery can train down very quickly when using it to it's full potential (100% at 8AM and then by 7PM it's easily down to 25%) and I've noticed that the battery on mine recently has started to get a lot hotter than usual and even sometimes when it's not being used very much so I don't know if the battery could be on the way out!

I've read quite a bit about the Galaxy A3 / A5 which are also worth considering but in my opinion the Alpha is the better phone in specs.

Liam.
