Does the Noctua NH-D14 fans just connect to the cpu fan connector on the board ? i heard it only has 3 pins, so does that mean the fan is on full speed all the time and you cant control it, or does the fan still power up and down depending on the cpu temps ? cheers

It will adjust according to cpu temp, the 4th pin is for fans which are controlled via PWM.

Thx for reply mate, shame such a good cpu fan does not come with 4th pin, or is this normal, will i still be able to make fan profiles thou ?

Normal, I think the only fan I have used which was PWM controlled was the Intel stock heatsink.

You should be able to-do everything the PWM would have done.

That's true up to a (fairly distant) point.

A 3-pin fan under software control can only spin in fairly crude steps of about 0.5V and it won't spin at all below 5V so you end up with a fan that can run at 100% (12V) down to 40% (5V) in about 14 discernible steps under software control.

A PWM fan always applies the full 12V and just turns it on and off very quickly so you can use the full 0-100% fan range if your motherboard BIOS allows it. So if you want a 1200rpm fan to run at 12rpm (1%) it's possible although I'm not sure how useful it is. In reality the 5-12V range offered by the 3-pin fan gives you the usable range you need.

If I was controlling a pump, I'd definitely want PWM. For fans 3-pin is usually fine. It's nice to have the extra controllability just in case though.

Thankyou for all the replys guys, if i bought some 4 pin case fans, can i then chouse to either use fan as PWM or the 3 pin mode ?

Noctua heatsinks come with their 4 pin PWM fans.

Can confirm that my d14 has 3 pin fans.

They easily go low enough to be what I would consider silent.

They are not even particularly loud at 100% (a bit quieter than my 290x tri-x is at 40% fan speed, which isn't loud.)

I find it better to use auto voltage switching than pwm, sometimes the pwm rpm range isn't low enough or doesn't suit.Like my ty 140 go at 900rpm minimum each on pwm.Under voltage option they just go from 7v 700rpm to full whack 12v 1250rpm when the cpu goes over 55c.I find it the better option if your pwm minimum fan rate is high.
