Short version of story, listing two similar items and one sold. Packaged it up, found out it cost more to post than I'd thought but posted it anyway and asked kindly for the person buying to pay a little bit more. Thought 'Oh well, if they don't, it's my fault so I can't complain'.

I've now discovered that I've sent the wrong item. Yes, I know, I know, but I was trying to deal with two kids yesterday, work, sort out a mortgage and a million other things and just made a mistake.

So.... I contacted the buyer straight away and said I'd sent the item out immediately, and asked him to refuse delivery for the wrong item. I know I'm taking a hit on this financially (I'll end up losing money, but maybe I'll get the original item back) but I don't care now, I just don't want the buyer to get the wrong item.

So, is this the right approach? Is there anything else I could have done. This way at least the buyer will end up with the right item, although a) I might not get the original back and b) I'm going to end up about £2 out of pocket.

so you sent an incorrect item out and somehow ebay are to blame?
makes sense.

No I'm to blame, which I said in my initial post.

I'm asking if I could have done anything other than what I've done - ask for the original item to be refused and sent the correct item at my expense.

I'm not sure where I said I blame Ebay. The title wasn't blaming Ebay, just expressing that whenever I use Ebay I always end up wondering why I bother because something always goes wrong. If it's no Ebay itself, it's me being an arse...

New thread:
Overclockers UK (Why do we bother)

OP:
I was browsing OcUK and fell off my chair. My kids distracted me and I can't move my arm. Someone call 999.

I'd make sure you receive the incorrect item back before sending out the correct one. There's nothing (apart from good will) stopping the recipient from keeping both now, and there's nothing eBay can do about it either.

I've made the same mistake before.
I asked the buyer if he would be able to post it on to the correct address for me and I refunded him enough to cover the costs.

I knew that if anything went wrong I would lose out but it was my fault in the first place so I took the risk.
Didnt have any problems - there are some honest people out there.

This has nothing to do with eBay. This is purely down you your IQ.

Actually scrap that, not even your IQ as even the lowest of low are still able to dispatch their items properly.

no personal attacks! they will not be tolerated. Before you question someone's IQ, maybe learn how to write a sentence too ;)

Begged for more money because you couldn't work out postage charges... really?

I love it when people form opinions without knowing the full facts.

The buyer asked for it to be posted 1st class which wasn't an option on my listing.

I weighed it on my scales and it came up as 1.8kg. I looked up the postage and quoted this to the buyer and he happily paid the additional £4.

When I posted I was informed it was 2.04kg which obviously added a huge additional cost, which I absorbed myself.

I'm not bitching about the cost to me. Or blaming Ebay. I'm asking if I've done the right thing in asking the buyer to refuse the original item and then absorbing the cost to post the correct item. As opposed to refunding the buyer and keeping hold of the correct item.

As for the £2, yes it doesn't seem like much but rather than making £10 on the transaction I'm losing £2, so it's actually £12. Entirely down to my own carelessness.

I just want to make sure I do the right thing in terms of the buyer, as I might want to sell again.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to be personal. I am happy that you have never made a mistake before in your life - but I do, especially when having two similar items on Ebay, working, looking after two kids by myself and buying a house. Sometimes you end up busy and a moment's distraction can cause a silly mistake. Which I made and have said more than once, was down to me.

I never, at any point, blamed EBay, I said I'd made a mistake (carelessness with two similar items) and was asking for advice on whether I'd take the right approach.

Yes, maybe the thread title should have been different, but I genuinely thought people might read the posts rather than making assumptions.
